The Rock of History
Sharjah Light Festival 2026
Al Rafisah Dam, Sharjah, UAE

For this year’s projection artwork at Rafisah Dam and Reservoir for Sharjah Light Festival, we were given a brief and a treasure trove.

The brief was to work with local history and the archaeology of the Faya Palaeolandscape, Sharjah’s newly inscribed @unescoworldheritage site, with exhibits featured in the Mleiha Archeology Centre.

The treasure trove was a fully digitised, 3D-scanned collection of Mleiha artefacts from @sharjaharchaeology.

This is how The Rock of History came to life through our collaboration with @studio.shum .

From prehistoric petroglyphs and Neolithic arrows to Roman coins and Islamic pottery, these artefacts had to tell the story of Sharjah alongside local flora and fauna.

The nature of the medium and canvas (projection onto uneven rock) required bold, high-contrast imagery. And bold, high-contrast imagery was exactly what the artists from SHUM came up with.

They worked with the rock’s shape, making the objects seem to emerge from within it. Ancient vessels became monumental. Rock drawings danced across the cliff. Coins moved through water and light.

This is what excites us about working with heritage. You discover something extraordinary in a collection, then work with artists to help others discover it too.

Seedling is a new media art installation where industrial material and organic forms meet. It was premiered at @prosvetfestival

The metal went through a metamorphosis, and in place of rusted scrap, a mosaic emerged – woven from sheets of shiny metal, light, and thousands of pixels.

Materials for the project were provided by @gradas.ru, a manufacturer of facade panels using EMOCIO® volumetric perforation technology.

Its metal surface reacts to the direction of light and the viewer’s position: as you move, the image becomes clear, dissolves and appears again. A single step can completely transform what you see.

The whole installation is powered by @touchdesigner software❤️

As artists working with technology and digital media, we see the @flametreeseason initiative in Dubai as a source of inspiration and a great material for creative experiments.

This reel is our first interpretation of Flame Tree through creative coding and interactive LED screen system. We hope it is only the beginning.

Everything that has ever entered the global 🕸️ will never leave its boundaries.

The internet is a kind of collective memory mechanism that should not be trusted with the most personal things, as at any moment your information can be accessed by someone else. The five-meter hand crafted art object ‘the Web’ has caught photographs and memes, personal data, messages and news headlines, books, and audiovisual content created by us.

Antipodes explores planetary duality through the contrast between Earth’s hemispheres 🌎

The globe is so familiar that we often forget how different life can be across the equator. For centuries, people created myths, calendars, navigation systems, and worldviews based on their own skies. Northern cultures relied on Polaris, while southern cultures looked to the Southern Cross. Yet all found meaning and orientation through their own constellations and stories.

We all know that maps and atlases distort the planet’s true form, right? New media art installation Antipodes proposes an alternative vision: two LED spheres represent separate hemispheres, connected by beams of light that create a shifting network of meridians and parallels.

Inspired in part by astronomical imagery shared by @nasa, the work reflects how our view of Earth depends on where we stand.

Antipodes has not yet been produced. We are seeking museums, festivals, cultural institutions, public art programs, and partners interested in bringing the installation to life.
