“The Musical World Beyond Twelve”

Studio31 is a collective of musicians, researchers, composers and instrument builders. Their common interest are instruments and music with more than 12 pitches per octave. Their approach is mainly inspired by historical concepts from the Renaissance period, such as the arciorgano and archicembalo by Nicola Vicentino or the clavemusicum omnitonum by Vito Trasuntino. The Studio31 collective researches and documents the context of these ideas and applies them within artistic projects.

"Presenting the Studio31 Team" ✨

Caspar Johannes Walter studied composition with V. D. Kirchner (Wiesbaden) as well as with J. Fritsch and C. Barlow (Cologne Conservatory of Music, 1985-90). In 1985 he was cofounder of the Cologne-based Thürmchen Verlag (Publishing House). He has received several major composition awards including the first prize in the Stuttgart Composition Competition (1991), the 13th Irino Prize for Orchestra (Japan, 1992), in 1995 the first prize in the competition »Vienna modern«, the Hindemith Award of the Schleswig-Holstein Festival and from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia the award for most promising in the category music. In 1988, he was awarded the same by the City of Cologne. He received a scholarship in 1995/96 at the Künstlerhof Schreyahn (Artists’ Colony), Lower Saxony, and in 1998 he has been granted a fellowship to carry out his work at the Villa Massimo in Rome. He has represented the young generation of Cologne musicians in exchange projects sponsored by the Goethe Institute in New York (1989) and Atlanta (1993). His pieces were selected for the World Music Days in Stockholm in 1994 and in Copenhagen in 1996. A CD with chamber music works by Caspar Johannes Walter released by the German Council of Music on the Label Wergo has been awarded the »Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik« in 1998.

His interests as an interpreter - he is cellist in the Thürmchen Ensemble, which he also co-founded in 1991 - are focused primarily on young composers from the areas of experimental music and musical theatre. Caspar Johannes Walter’s works are performed regularly, not only in Europe but also very successfully in the USA and Japan, for example 1993 World Premieres in Atlanta and Tokyo.

In 2002/2003 Caspar Johannes Walter was teacher of composition and composer in Residence at the University of Birmingham/UK, since 2006 he was professor for composition and director of the studio contemporary music in Stuttgart/Germany and since since 2013 he is professor for composition at the Musikakademie Basel/Switzerland. In 2014 he was elected into the „Akademie der Künste, Berlin“.

Johannes Keller, harpsichord player, ensemble leader and specialist for period performance practice graduated at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in 2010. As an internationally active freelance musician his main focus is music theatre and chamber music. He is founding member of the early music groups Il Profondo and L’Istante and collaborates regularly with various formations such as La Cetra Barockorchester Basel. Since 2013 he teaches tuning and intonation at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.

Bringing the organ pipe into new contexts and spaces. Come and experience the acoustics of a massive parking garage at @basel.social.club.

My installation, Fresco Sonoro, opens tomorrow at 14:00 and will be running daily until next Saturday from 16:00 to 23:00.

I will also be performing live on Thursday, June 18, at 18:00.

The parking garage is filled with art and many other incredible installations!

Beautiful days in Amsterdam at the Organ Symposium at Orgelpark, surrounded by inspiring artists and an incredible diversity of musical perspectives. 🫶🏼

I had the opportunity to present my artistic research and perform Mosaico II together with @juuptakken featuring spatial sound diffusion with @4dsound.

Wir glauben fest, dass wenn wir die Ton-Ordnungen und Klangarchitekturen verschieben, auch Verschiebungen und Öffnungen in Gesellschaft, Staat und Politik möglich sind… so entsteht Raum für andere Körper, andere Bewegungen, andere Tänze … um wieder mit dem Leben zu tanzen (Sara Ahmed). Wir denken diese sind weniger normativ, weniger wertend, weniger binär… und hier liegt ein performatives Potential… ein Potential zur Freiheit…

We firmly believe that if we shift sonic orders and sound architectures, shifts and openings in society, the state, and politics also become possible… thus creating space for other bodies, other movements, other dances… to dance with life once again (Sara Ahmed). 16th century composer Nicola Vicentino published some short fragments of enharmonic compositions in 1555 using 31 pitches per octave. Here is the first few bars of “Madonna il poco dolce” we played with my dear friend Johannes Keller at Harvard University’s Center for Renaissance Studies. Last weekend we had the privilege of having the incredible singer Dragana Tomić with us, teaching the art of traditional Serbian folk singing as part of the “Arciorgano” symposium arranged by @studio31_basel and @hsmbasel_sonicspace.
This unique musical tradition originated from people gathering together and enjoying the acoustic phenomena that emerge from the small intervals between their voices. These songs are kept alive thanks to artists like Dragana who research it and spread it out.

The Explorateur will be set up on site:
The *Explorateur* is a modular, digitally controlled wind-dynamic organ that dissolves the boundaries between audio design and composition, allows for sound modulations that were previously technically impossible, and can be played via numerous alternative interfaces (gestural, graphic, algorithmic).
