Heyington Residence - Toorak, Australia
.
Positioned amongst Melbourne’s leafy inner-suburbs, Heyington Residence is a renovation of an 1930’s interwar single-residential home. The home’s original architect sought inspiration from the Arts & Crafts movement, placing emphasis on quality materials, skilled labour and the honest expression of function. Through Heyington Residence’s next iteration, we have preserved and paid homage to their ideas.

We’re incredibly proud to announce Nathan Varga as Director alongside co-founder Annabel Smart at Studio 11:11 in New Zealand.

Nathan is a rare talent, with a level of skill matched by his character. He brings exceptional integrity and care to his work, with as much consideration for the client experience as for the quality of the design and technical delivery. He genuinely cares about getting things right, in every sense.

Having been integral to shaping the New Zealand studio into what it is today, Nathan’s appointment marks an exciting next chapter for Studio 11:11.

We feel incredibly fortunate to have him alongside us as we continue to grow and shape the future of the practice.

Across our work, we constantly seek out opportunities to collaborate with makers whose processes bring something unexpected, tactile and deeply considered into the built environment. Our affinity for material exploration connects us with artists and craftspeople who challenge our understanding of what a material can become.

A local New Zealand schist rock, sand-cast in recycled aluminium. Created by Elde Gallery for a Queenstown residence, this wall-mounted piece draws upon the material alchemy of sand casting, a process of patience and restraint.

Together with New Zealand artist Amy Yalland of ROENN, we explored the expressive potential of natural materials through handcrafted paper pulp tiles, made from rescued paper and natural pigments. Each tile is unique, transforming discarded materials into something tactile and enduring.

At our PH Digital office project, a sense of softness and comfort was woven into the design. Starting with the entry—a cozy, low-lit, cave-like space that contrasts dramatically with the expansive, light-filled open-plan office beyond

At Nareeb House, a mindful selection of natural materials underscored our design ethos

A harmonious, neutral palette was curated to complement the vibrant internal courtyard, fostering an atmosphere of tranquillity and grace throughout the residence. We opted for large monolithic stone structures juxtaposed with small scale cobblestone flooring, showcasing the inherent elegance of raw, earthy textures

Behind the scenes..

This grand old mansion has stood as a quiet witness to generations past, carrying within its walls the stories, craftsmanship, and character of those who came before. Having weathered the earthquakes that reshaped Christchurch, it carries with it not only a sense of history, but of resilience.

Our vision is not to preserve it as a relic, but to breathe new life into it, allowing it to evolve with grace and purpose for generations yet to come.

We are so grateful to be involved in the reimagination of this significant historic landmark for Christchurch; @mcleansnz in collaboration with @mijntjelepoutre by @studio_11_11

Moody tones, done right!

Clean architectural lines paired with a dramatic stone island bench and smoky grey cabinetry creates a bold foundation in this space. But at the heart is our Bellmore plank bringing it all together.

With its light brushed surface and natural grain variation, Bellmore adds depth and character, practical for modern living.

Send this post to someone who loves a bold but moody palette 🤍

The energy of a project is often hidden behind the finished walls, but at our CASA event, the chemistry between the architect, designer, and builder was impossible to miss and evident in these shots.

These images capture more than just a stunning fitout and panel discussion; they illustrate the power of a unified design-build partnership. It was a privilege to go behind the scenes of this partnership between Mark Andrews of CASA, Annabel Smart of Studio 11:11 and Jack O’Neill of Strata, and witness how mutual trust between disciplines elevates the final outcome.

Thank you to everyone who joined us. We would love to hear your thoughts - what was your biggest takeaway from seeing this partnership in action? by @studio_11_11
