Jacques Adnet black lacquered cabinet by Jacques Adnet from Museum of Modern Art, Paris, late 1980.

I love how Adnet brought a new way of thinking about furniture design. Creating furniture that did more than serve function, they maintained this clean geometric form from hand-stitched leather, smoked glass, and chromed metal at a time when most designs were ornate and elaborate.

The work is fuses opulence and restraint. Very drawn to this method when it comes to creating pieces for our clients. I want to see furniture that is comfortable and from each angle looks incredibly beautiful. I always imagine when the clients’ kids grow up and they can seamlessly fit the furniture into their own interiors no matter the style.

Mary Abbott (1921-2019), Lucy, c. 1956-58

Painted by artist Mary Abbott, I love the sun-drenched yellows and unexpected sweeps of blue, green, and magenta move with a confidence.

Hanging a piece like this in a home changes the room differently. The movement and saturation creates an anchor, the color story every cushion, wood tone, and lamp gets to respond to, leaving the rest of the space calm so the canvas can keep doing the talking.

That’s what I love about when art meets considered interior design: the room stops starts being a conversation.

When art takes the central approach.

The main room in @rashidjohnson home reflects what happens when you let the art lead. The abstract female form sculpture by Simone Leigh from “Sentinel” series anchors the wall with raw, symbolic power, referencing art from the African diaspora anchors the room with roaring ceiling height. A live-edge table by George Nakashima, a piece that carries the memory of the tree it came from sit harmoniously.

What I love most about designing when art takes a central approach, is the conversation it creates across cultures, continents and time. American, Brazilian, mid-century, contemporary, nothing here is decorative for decoration’s sake. Every object carries weight, history, intention.

In the TV snug room, it is cocooning with a singular yet powerful work by Deana Lawson. Art is key in every room, elevating the space.

This is what I believe great interiors should do: celebrate tradition, Honour craft. Hold culture. Create spaces that feel layered because they are, built slowly, with meaning, by people who understood that permanence is its own form of beauty.

Your home should tell your story.

Recently came across the work of @wynniemynervaa a multidisciplinary artist, though mainly expressed through painting, their work spans performance, sculpture and installation.

In each room, I believe one piece with supporting talent and i am drawn to their work which is performative and pictorial.

Influenced by my time as an actor in theatre, I start with one piece, a work of art and build around this, creating something that is layered, playful yet functional.

Honored to be featured in Design Centre Chelsea Harbour ‘The Journal’ among 8 designers shaping the future of design.

To be within The Journal, is a reflection on the work we pour ourselves into, considered choices, the slow curation and celebration of craft is being felt. Great design is never rushed. From understanding of materials to a desire to create spaces with permanence, our design philosophy is acknowledged by a community we hold in high regard, is deeply encouraging.

In conversation with @elizabethjmetcalfe

Thank you to the team at @designcentrech championing and celebrating emerging talent with such grace and thoughtfulness.

New Month, New Week and I am admiring this entrance hall, beautifully layered design by @abd_studio. What I am drawn to most is the relationships, from the commode to @studioluctuymans work watching over the space. Each detail compliments on another. Space feeling welcoming and fresh.

Trained in Abuja Pottery Centre, Ladi Kwali carried on a family tradition. In her early works from jars to water vessels were decorated and brought to life with motifs of lizards, snakes, birds and crocodiles, reflecting her heritage.

There is something about a sense that the clay remembers the hands that shaped it, carrying this energy. I really admire how her work for expression of tradition fused with modern techniques.

Gaeta, the home of inspiration for Cy Twombly.

Love this image, a dialogue between the architecture of an older building and the curated life lived within.

Interiors that are restraint yet full of richness with each piece carrying a story and earning its place.

Just look up

Inspiration is everywhere.

On a recent trip to Oxfordshire, visited Blenheim palace and what caught my eyes were not just the beautiful antiques and furniture, what drew me was outside.
In the North Portico entrance are six painted eyes by British Artist Colin Gill. What a way to make an entrance.

A well designed space, has a soul.

Admiring the ornate details in this courtyard at Bait Mujallid, Damascus.

I often think of how we narrate stories through design, here I admire the story of patience and geometry, balancing of opulence with harmony.

The craftsmanship is extraordinary, the intricate inlay work, layered ornamentation that makes the eye linger for moments longer. Here nothing eels rushed not accidental, just a celebration of decades of a craft that has been horned and woven into the soul of this room.

This is inspiring, though I wouldn’t say I was a maximalist, is reflects our approach, the mixing of pattern, texture, and history, can make spaces that feel as luxurious as they look.
