As I released a more extensive version of Distort some time ago, I decided to give it a worthy presentation and spot on this page.

Distort is a two-axis variably typeface that lets you control the weight and the distortion of the letters to suit both serious typography and more artistic communication.

For now I’m moving on to explore other typographic styles in new font projects but I might revisit this project later. For those interested, Distort can be purchased on my gumroad, link in bio.

Lettering inspired by early modern blackwork prints, specifically Esaias van Hulsen (3rd slide).

Blackwork is a printing method, briefly used in the early 1600s. It works by filling the gaps in a copper plate -normally filled with coloured glass- with thick ink, to then press on a sheet of paper.

One week of carving stones at la_cambre ‘s erasmus programme led me to create a series of letters designed to look great engraved in rocks, and fit the concept of the word and overall exhibition of the group.

In the theme of “the death of words”, I chose the word Sentience. Originally used to refer to the ability to experience physical feelings, now it’s mixed up often with consciousness. A quality that is usually not attributed to other beings when they seem less intelligent even though they could still experience physical suffering.

For this reason, I chose to design extremely sharp letterforms in a gothic and tribal style. To make it more natural and chaotic, I first broke and roughened the stones I would work with, then carve the letters, and finally position them in a scattered way.

This has been an amazing experience,
big thanks to David, Noémi, Davide, and everyone else involved.

Sápmi display typeface

Sápmi Display was born from a conceptual branding that would represent the football association of Sápmi, part of the CONIFA league. The CONIFA league represents teams with a distinct people/group that are not represented by a legal nation. The Sámi from Sápmi are an indigenous people that have inhibited the north of Norway, Sweden, Finland and west Russia. Football for them is a way to inform the world about their existence and relevance, and therefore, a visual translation of their football identity became synonymous to a visual translation of their cultural identity.

The main inspiration for the font is the reindeer, an important cultural symbol for the Sámi people. Top-heavy curves in the letterforms and top-positioned serifs imitate the imposing silhouette of the reindeer and its antlers. Downward pointing serifs are larger than the horizontal ones to create balance by adding more visual weight to letters with large open counters and negative space. Naturally the taller uppercase characters, and the choice of curves made this typeface appear sporty enough to suit a football club.

After the design was locked in, additions to the glyph set made the typeface more culturally relevant and more complete. For instance, aesthetic ligatures for some letter pairs reflect a sense of community and unity. Also, adding the accents and special characters for all the Sámi languages would hypothetically allow them to express themselves textually, even in languages that are nearly extinct.

(2/2) Conceptual exhibition print design for @gianmariatosatti_studio 's Es Brent! & Paradiso in Milan. Booklet highlights.

The booklet/exhibition catalogue is at the center of this project. It covers the essay, exhibition views for both locations, and artwork section for Es Brent!. The layout is neutral to give power to the striking photography and artworks. Subtle choices of typeface and positioning give the publication character that represents the chaotic and dark themes of the art.

(1/2) Conceptual exhibition print design for @gianmariatosatti_studio 's Es Brent! & Paradiso in Milan for Lia Rumma. Poster, two sided invitation & trifold leaflet. (exam project)

The exhibitions are connected and immerse the viewer in spaces of absence and decay to confront the fragility of memory, belief, and the remnants of collapsed civilizations.

The challenge was to combine both exhibitions in one consistent visual language that puts the artworks first, yet has its own editorial personality. This involved choosing colours, typefaces, and making decisions about sizing and positioning.

The visual language was then applied to touchpoints that could promote the two exhibitions together.
