In honor of Katie’s grand opening today, I’m so excited to share @the.kbstudio brand!

Katie came to me knowing she was multifaceted and wanted to infuse these different aspects into one business. She’s a fine artist, a muralist, and a collector who has spent twenty years wandering antique shops and estate sales following an instinct that has never steered her wrong. The challenge was to figure out how to bring it all together under one brand that made sense.

We started with brand strategy and let her origin story lead the way. Her grandfather built a cabin that she grew up visiting, then her children grew up visiting. It shaped her more than she probably realized at the time. Her grandpa didn’t have any type of designer experience or professional help but he did have an eye. Barn wood walls, sunflowers in the kitchen, a fire engine red light fixture from a 1917 fire truck he restored with his own hands, and a butter yellow door that Katie picked the paint for.

When that cabin sold, Katie took what it gave her and invested it into this. Into a business built around the belief that the things you surround yourself with should mean something.

So when we built the brand we honored that story. The butter yellow, the red that shows up as an accent, exactly the way it did in that cabin. The sunflowers informed the illustrative direction, the Welsh heritage Katie carries shaped the decorative elements. Every detail was chosen because it belonged, which is exactly what her grandfather taught her through example.

What launched today is a fine art studio, a curated vintage shop, and a commissions practice. But really it is a woman trusting herself and bringing her whole history with her.

So proud of you Katie, enjoy tonight, you deserve it šŸ’› by @studio_kinship

You’re capable.
You’ve figured out harder things than this.
You’ve literally built an entire business.
And yet you keep reworking your brand, the colors, the fonts, the logo.

BECAUSE that’s the common misconception,
that branding is just how it looks.
BUT there’s much more to it, which is why nothing you try quite works.

And that is exactly why I created a free private podcast series to teach you WHAT branding actually is, so that you can finally name WHY your brand feels misaligned and understand HOW to solve your branding woes.

When business owners come to me for a rebrand, they often stumble over why their old branding didn’t feel right or connect anymore. It just no longer felt aligned, it never did, or it just served its purpose until it didn’t.

Finding the core reason for the rebrand is often one of the first things I’ll explore with my clients. Because that’s the problem we should be solving, not just making a brand ā€œprettierā€ or make it stand out more. I want to fix that disconnect and discover how we can craft a brand that fully embodies the business, the owner, AND the target audience. When we build a brand, we aren’t just building it for one person, there are multiple layers to consider, and when those aren’t considered, it can often lead to a brand that feels disconnected months later.

This is a major reason I created my free private branding podcast, ā€œThe Groundwork.ā€ To help business owners understand what a brand is, why there is a disconnect, and where to go from there. And I made it a podcast because I know we’re all busy, with barely any time for our own businesses. So listen to it while you’re doing dishes, waiting in the car line, or taking your daily walk. Each episode is less than 10 minutes, and I PROMISE, it’ll bring so much clarity.

Somewhere Interiors started as a conversation in a café in Carmel.

Kaytee and I were college roommates. We learned how to adult together. I introduced her to her husband, we backpacked Europe, we got each other through design school, hers in interiors.

8 years later we’re in that café as moms and business owners, trying to name her business.

She’d been trying to rebrand herself for a long time before that trip. She’s a designer with taste, so there was no reason to think she couldn’t.

But taste was never the missing piece. She didn’t have the full picture of what a brand includes or where to start. Nobody teaches that part.

So that day I walked her through the scope of it, then asked the questions I ask my clients. Why interiors. Who is this for. What do you want someone to feel walking into a home you designed.

We ended up in her story. And the name came out of the story, not the other way around.

THAT is the lesson. She’d been trying to name a business she hadn’t defined yet.

Somewhere is the place you go in your head. Warm, safe, specific. It could only ever be yours. And somewhere is also anywhere you point at. Kaytee takes the house you already live in and turns it into that place. She works in the bones, not the finishes, because what makes a home easier to live in is never the pillows.

Who she’s for: the mom told to pick between a home that works for her kids and one that feels like her. She deserves both.

Her values came out of all of it. Functional. Intentional. Connection. Nostalgic.

ONLY THEN did we design.

The mark is a motel keytag, and that came from her grandpa who was ā€œher personā€ growing up. Part of why home means what it means to her. I was there the day she got the call that he passed, learning for the first time what grief looks like from beside someone instead of inside it.

Putting him into her brand 8 years later felt like a full circle moment.

That’s what nostalgic means here. Not outdated. Rooted.

That’s why it works. Not because it’s pretty. Because it’s carrying something.

If your brand feels off and you keep changing your logo, your logo probably isn’t the problem.

Most moodboards stop at ā€œokay this all feels really goodā€. But that’s just step one.

The part nobody teaches you is what happens after: Sorting that board into sections, logo, color, fonts, texture, graphics, icons & symbols, then studying each one until you notice the thread.

Same font in three logos you saved? Same symbol in five icons? That’s not random. That’s your taste telling you something.

That’s the difference between a board that just looks pretty and one that actually helps you build something solid and lasting.

I made a free guide that walks you through the whole process, the sorting, the studying, all of it.

This one lives in the details.

Odette’s brand isn’t just a logo. It’s an emblem, a menu, a wordmark that shows up at a dinner table exactly the way it shows up on a Substack page. That consistency doesn’t happen by accident.

Look close at that emblem. Two doves for her grandmother. A horseshoe for Texas. A seashell for the transformation that got her from one to the other. Every piece of it came from something she actually lived.

She said it herself, before we ever touched a font: a love letter to the in-between of falling apart and figuring it out.
That’s not brand copy. That’s just the roots. My job was making sure the identity could hold it.

BUT that only happens if you find the real story first. Skip that step and you end up with a pretty menu and nothing underneath it.

Save this if you’re about to start a brand project. Before you touch a moodboard, write down the actual story. Not your mission statement. The real one — what you lived through to get here. That’s what the whole identity should be built from. by @studio_kinship

A logo is not a brand. There, I said it again.
You got the logo. You’re still waiting to feel like a brand. So you keep editing it, sure the next version will fix it. It won’t, because a logo is one piece of the ecosystem, not the whole thing. That’s branding, and it’s usually the real reason your marketing isn’t landing.

The letter’s been written for a long time now.

This relaunch just gave it the stationery to match.

Since 2018, Love, Laura has been creating weddings filled with thoughtful details, lush florals, calm logistics, and really good people. Our role in this new chapter was never to reinvent the brand, but to create an identity that felt as intentional, personal, and considered as the experience Laura has always created for her clients.

A little more layered.
A little more refined.
Still unmistakably Love, Laura.

Thank you for trusting us with this one. taken in New York City by @studio_kinship

Honestly I’m still figuring out my relationship with AI too.

I know people feel strongly; some are all in, some want nothing to do with it… and I get both sides. What I do know is where I’ve landed for now: I don’t think AI should create for us. I don’t think it should do our thinking, draft our ideas, or replace the part of the work that is actually us. That creative processing (the way your brain makes connections, the instincts you’ve built, the voice that is distinctly yours) that’s not something to outsource.

But the minute tasks? The organizing, the summarizing, the taking a brain dump of everything you know about your business and turning it into something structured and usable? That’s where it earns its place. Not as the creator. As the assistant.

Same with Canva. It’s not the enemy of good design. It’s just a tool that works a lot better when it’s been given something real to work with.

That’s what this post is about. Not whether you should use these tools, but what happens when you finally give them the foundation they were always missing. by @studio_kinship

The kind of brand that feels like a letter,
lovingly crafted just for you.

The hand-addressed envelope.
The wax seal.
Words chosen with intention.

The kind of thing that makes you smile and feel deeply considered.

We’re still writing it.
Almost ready to send.

Love, Laura
