Hi Fayetteville Community,

I will be hosting a C R E A T I V E R U N C L U B that will start at the UARK Student and Design Center first floor lobby every Friday at 11 a.m.
.
This is a no-drop, beginning friendly community experience led by Leah Pollock with other guest creative leaders. The focus of this engagement is to emphasize creative pathways between thinking and movement. Leah Pollock will facilitate prompts that give space to qualitative thinking and relationship building, over the standard quantitative and metric-driven thinking that dominates athletics. The goal is to develop an understanding of embodied learning and how that affects all areas of life.

The club is open to students, faculty, and the public The meeting place is SDCR lobby and roll out at 11:10am. The run will be mostly road.

Will you attend tomorrow? by @studio_leahpollock

Anticipating showing new works this Thursday at MIXD Gallery. As I approach my 20th year working with clay, it’s been amazing to let myself evolve and stay true to listening to where I want to be in each moment. The same curiosity that pulled me into this medium still guides me today because I allow myself to act on those curiosities. I tell my students to run towards the fear because that is where the most learning can happen. We want to evolve.

I’m excited to share that ideas that have been sitting in my head for 10+ years have come to fruition!

My aesthetic has been heavily influenced by endurance trail running often times in the snow. White landscapes have always been the closest visual representation of what I experience mentally when in nature, alone and running on trails. The silence, the layers, the act of my body slicing through elevations high and low all contribute to a mental state of clarity, flow and continuousness. I wrote a 50-page thesis in graduate school for ceramic art about how this trifecta is an ideal way of being. (Thesis link in profile.)

This is all relevant in my current wall works as I am being more literal with subject matter. I am finally paying homage to specific trails that have captured my attention and provided an environment for this human potential.

This mural is about Slaughter Pen, Phase I in Bentonville, Arkansas. This trail system is important and iconic in my current place of ā€œhomeā€ as it is a symbol of the athletic potential available in us all for the sport of mountain biking. I live in a place coined ā€œMountain Bike Capital of the Worldā€, no joke. Bentonville, Arkansas has some of the most varied and advanced bike trails in the U.S. In Bella Vista, Arkansas I have access to over 100+ miles of trails out my back door.

This artwork is literal in that the first two topographic lines are direct outlines of Slaughter Pen, Phase 1 trial system. This iconic group of trails sits at the epicenter of Bentonville’s mountain bike trail system.

I am excited to offer custom artworks in my style that elevates your favorite trails and brings them inside for contemplation.

New work coming soon to @mixd.gallery for the September Design Show. Excited to be a part of this show for the third year.

This work is roughly based on the Muir Woods trail system in Marin County, California where I have spent countless hours running, hiking, and daydreaming.

Stitches on my face become stitches in my work.

Honor the desire
Listen to the body
Put the hands to work
Make the work you crave
Let the mind watch it happen
Then ask the questions
Repeat the circle

Leah Pollock is in her second year as Full-Time Ceramics Faculty, Studio Technician and GA Manager. She brings with her over a decade of arts management experience, including two years managing the SculX Department here at UARK.

Leah Pollock is a ceramic artist, sculptor, and educator with over 17 years of national and international show experience. She creates large-scale sculptural vessels, ceramic tile murals, and small batch soda-fired porcelain domestic pottery for homes, design firms, architects, and the design trade.
Her professional experience spans arts management, project leadership, education, consulting, and fine art practice. She has taught ceramics and art courses for over a decade at institutions including the University of Missouri, City College of San Francisco, California College of the Arts, and Laney College. She has also led ceramics programs for nonprofits, colleges, summer camps, and community art centers.

As Operations Manager and Board Member of The Potters’ Studio in Berkeley, California, she helped guide the organization’s nonprofit transition to secure longevity for the 500 student and member base, supported a major studio expansion, and launched scholarship programs that increased access to ceramics education.

Based in Bella Vista, Arkansas, Pollock continues her studio practice while serving as a full-time faculty at UARK. Her approach to teaching is rooted in respect for the body as our main tool, understanding and applying Flow Theory in the classroom and utilizing Japanese throwing techniques.

Wood firing day 2 was a success! Today we wait and tomorrow we see if all the hard work paid off.

I’m so thankful to @studio_leahpollock for bringing me along for the ride and to @zachtate_artist for hosting and teaching us the ways of the wood fired kiln.

I’ve learned so much in the process and I can’t wait to see the work unloading tomorrow to get all the data and feedback from the pots to catalogue for the next time I get the opportunity to fire! šŸ”„ taken in Jonesboro, Arkansas by @studio_leahpollock

Reflecting on the unpredictable magic that a layer of atmosphere provides. Those who chase it, know its rewards are more than physical.

Loading up a few pieces in a class soda firing today and seeing the possibilities for new tile work. Trying 3/8ā€, 1/2ā€, 1ā€ tiles to see what can lay flat. Porcelain, ā€œtileā€ stoneware clay, and reclaim. Stay tunned!

Most of these pieces have sold. However, many more are in the works.
