Conversation with artist Vesna Pavlović and art historian Nicoletta Rousseva

Please join us for a conversation between critically acclaimed Serbian-American artist Vesna Pavlović and art historian Nicoletta Rousseva, moderated by Julie Hessler, UO Associate Professor of History. Their dialogue will explore Pavlović’s body of photographic work in relation to its primary subject: the social and political ideologies reflected in mid-century Socialist Yugoslavian architecture, with particular interest in connections between statehood, power, and design. By focusing her lens on largely abandoned or transitionally preserved spaces, Pavlović highlights how art, architecture, and design are intrinsically bound to the rise and fall of political regimes and to the shaping of ideological worldviews.

Studio Arts faculty Vesna Pavlović and Tamara Reynolds are both featured in a contemporary photography show opening with the Leu Gallery in the Lila D. Bunch Library at Watkins College of Art at Belmont University in October 2026.

“Obscuring, Revealing” brings together a varied group of Nashville-based photographers who are testing the boundaries of documentary practice. Through personal narrative, formal experimentation, historical allusion, alternative processes, and even the blurring of fact and fiction, these artists offer complex and provocative pictures of contemporary life, ones that prompt reflection on what photography makes visible and what it obscures. In doing so, the exhibition highlights the vital work being made by photographers in and around Nashville while also inviting visitors to rethink the possibilities of documentary photography.

Also opening in October, Pavlovic presents a solo exhibition with RecRoom in Eugene, Oregon.

Like “No Ordinary Sunset”, the photographs that comprise the exhibition Vesna Pavlović: A Room with a View showcase the care and perspicacity necessary to create captivating images and the attentiveness required to see and view with discernment. Pavlović’s work is precise in its compositional form and balance. But in equal measure, her photographs also attest to the pleasure of looking and seeing and enjoying a view of an extraordinary sunset, of an impermanent object, of a remote location, of a forgotten history, or of an unseen interior. As art critic and curator Jelena Vesić puts it, Pavlović’s photographs “display things to us.” And accordingly, part of the work’s allure resides in the vibrant tension it produces between seeing, showing, and viewing.

Vanderbilt University Department of Art in collaboration with the Engine for Art, Democracy, and Justice (EADJ) hosts town hall for Black Forest: Nashville with founder and Berg Global Fellow Ekene Ijeoma.

Nashville TN — September 2, 2026 — The Department of Art and Engine for Art, Democracy and Justice at Vanderbilt University invites students, faculty, staff, and the public to the Town Hall for Black Forest: Nashville on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at Begonia Labs.

Led by Fall 2026 Berg Global Artist-in-Residence Fellow Ekene Ijeoma, Black Forest is planting trees for Black ancestors and distributing multimedia on Black Nature, as a living monument and archive for Black lives. Ijeoma founded Black Forest in his lab, Poetic Justice, at MIT (18-24’) during the COVID-19 pandemic and Black Lives Matter movement in 2022. In response to the uncounted lives shortened and harmed by racial and environmental inequalities, he was called to plant over 40,000 trees across the US and abroad in 12 years. He partnered with governments, organizations, corporations, and communities to plant over 600 trees across 9 cities, memorializing ancestors while mitigating heat islands, food deserts, asthma and cancer alleys—for their descendants.

For his residency in the Department of Art at Vanderbilt, he’s organizing community events to plant trees across Vanderbilt campus and spaces in North Nashville including schools, churches, parks and gardens.

Happy first day of the fall semester @vanderbilt.art 🌅

I am honored to lead a fantastic group of colleagues in my third year as a department chair 💫

This fall department is hosting artist Ekene Ijeoma who will implement the Black Forest project on campus as a part of his Berg Global artist in residency @vuartsci

Ekene Ijeoma is a first-generation Nigerian-American artist based in New York City. He researches social, political, and environmental systems to develop multimedia works that poetically expose inequities and mutually empower communities. Working across monumental and personal scales, his practice spans community-based land works, interactive light installations, and data-driven sculptures and performances.

Dayanita Singh’s Archivio exhibition, which was on view this summer at the City Archive in Venice was a true testament to an archive as a production of knowledge. Sometime, collateral @labiennale Venice exhibitions offer a true moment of reflection and inspiration. Dayanita Singh’s photographs developed over a period of 25 years in Italy through the network of friendship and solidarity. Archival images take stage, as well as portraits of individuals, material objects, woven into the space of the historic building and its setting. This work brings the past forward, makes ties between history and the contemporary moment, in ways that offer hope.

Lawrence Abu Hamdan’s 450XL: The Story of a Fugitive Sound (2026 Fifteen-channel video installation, at the Complesso dell’Ospedaletto, Venice is an absolute highlight of this year’s Venice experience. I am subjective to witness this poignant continuation of student protest, resilience, and hope in Serbia. In this beautiful setting something so painful is bearable. Words resonate, as well as images. Silence speaks as resistance continues.

“During Serbia’s recent student movement, silent vigils have become an effective mode of resistance against the government. These acts of collective silence are held for 15 minutes: one minute for each person who died in the collapse of a railway station canopy in November 2024. On March 15, 2025, around 300,000 people participated in a silent vigil in Belgrade and, just as it was about to conclude, video recordings show the crowd suddenly dispersing as if fleeing from some invisible yet terrifying force. The following day, the inbox of Earshot – the audio research agency founded and directed by the artist – was flooded with requests from the victims to investigate the event. The team set to work reconstructing the “fugitive sound” at the centre of the attack: a sound whose presence was denied by Serbian and Russian authorities, undetectable to microphones, yet described with striking consistency across more than 3,000 written statements. After conducting 15 in-depth earwitness interviews, Earshot concluded that this was among the first documented uses of a sonic weapon known as an LRAD 450XL.” Fondazione In Between Art Film

I have new strings. Things are good on court. Team won the @ustasoutherntennis Sectionals in Rome, GA 🏆 We beat Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina. My partner @kellynbailey is a beautiful player; our victories are hers 💖 Our captains are smart (Holly Fisher and Bailey), and our team is built of energetic and committed players who also have a ton of fun on court. We remain undefeated. Onward to the Nationals! 💚🏆🌟🎾🥂

Featuring painting, photography, and mixed media, Nashville Hot Summer: Edition 4 explores the spirit of summer through works that evoke heat, light, growth, movement, travel, and transformation. Across the exhibition, artists consider the ways place informs experience and how memory, landscape, identity, and history become intertwined over time. Nature plays a central role throughout the exhibition. Gardens become spaces of observation and renewal, weather becomes a record of passing time, and landscapes hold traces of personal and collective histories. Drawing inspiration from the landscapes, colors, and rhythms of the natural world, the exhibition explores the vitality and transformation of the summer season.
