This is my little daughter's ear, sculpted in bronze.

Alongside eyes and fingerprints, our ears are among the very few externally visible aspects of our bodies that are entirely unique.

A couple of days ago I shared with you a brief history of "lover's eye" jewelry - painted miniatures of a loved one's eye that have been set in lieu of gems in various jewelry pieces. That is what was on my mind when I was working on carving this little miniature ear.

I love how, much like the eye, this little ear might seem like it could belong to almost anyone, and yet once you look closely, it truly signifies just one individual. & Like the lover's eye jewels, only those that have been told about the "sitter" know to whom the ear belongs.

I guess because this little ear belongs to one I love, I have a particularly strong sentimental attachment to this odd little pendant (& I have a ring, too).

Hi all, this feels like a good time for a reintroduction!

✨ My name is Sasha and I am based in New York’s Hudson Valley

🪄 I am originally from Belarus, but have mainly lived in NYC before making my way up the Hudson Valley

🥂 My husband accidentally got me into jewelry making in 2013 when he made my wedding band, and I decided to make his and fell in love with the process

🖤 My academic background is in art history and prior to focusing on a fine jewelry studio practice I worked with art museums, an art auction house, and co-owned an art gallery in NYC

📚 Here at Studio Avdel I make ooak & small batch fine jewelry pieces that often take inspiration from historical works - it might be visible in something small like the general shank structure of a ring or more direct like a reconstruction designed for modern wear

🪩 I’ve done some form of dance - from ballet to belly (& lots in between) for most of my life but in these past few years I mostly prance around and make TikTok dance videos that I never post while jamming to whatever is my daughter’s current favorite song

🎶 this week she has “I Don’t Mind It” by Cullah on repeat

There are, at present, only four gems under the title of “precious” (itself an outdated, but still commonly used term) — emeralds, sapphires, rubies & diamonds.

But what do you think - is there is a rule that determines which stones are considered precious & which ones aren’t? I get into that a little in the video ✨

A little tiny preview of the next studio shop update.

The green gem of this antique seal fob-inspired gold pendant makes me think of kiwi fruit 🥝

I do not have a date yet, as I’m still working on pieces, but make sure to get on my mailing list of you’d like a note on when works become available.
