OPEN ENDED - CURATOR’S QUOTE

No Limit. Flexible. Continuous Discussion. Spontaneous Responses - such is the definition of the artistic journey.

A photographer who has spanned 7 continents in pursuit of the perfect shot, executing spontaneous responses when facing an attack from a two-ton rhino.

A Hall of Fame abstract artist who showed with Pollock and de Kooning and had continuous discussions on the post WWII movement.

An Italian Vogue fashion photographer who creates tableaux that engage on all fronts with no limit on the narrative, alongside famed iconic imagery from the past and present that does the same.

Add to that female centric whimsical paintings where one could find oneself atop a strawberry shortcake or a full moon or mysteriously swimming at night in a misty lagoon, or looking for that martini and designer purse that will make it all better.

Figurative and abstract paintings with soft, alluring palettes share the space with aerial photography and floppy disk creations.

And, of course, Open Ended would be remiss without sculptures of three figures who collectively have fueled continuous discussions: Marley, Sinatra and Picasso.

In curating this exhibit we wanted multiple takes on creativity. No limit is a relentless doctrine of the art world, and it is what keeps it ever-evolving. Ergo the flexibility. But this exhibit is the lighter side of no limit - just a delightful stroll through a myriad of muses.

Open Ended runs from July 1 – August 9

Disruption. Reorganization. A move to surprise, unsettle. Or, in artistic terms, exactly that. The abstract artist does not look at a canvas to recreate something seen but to reinterpret a confluence of things imagined. Disruption is integral to the art sojourn.

Cubism challenged Impressionism and Dada and Surrealism moved the needle further until Abstract Expressionism arrived with less focus on the subconscious turmoil and more on the emotional intent. The abstract artist presents the viewer with an invitation to ‘see what I see’ or ‘feel what I feel.’

The White Room Gallery’s first spring exhibit, Shake It Up, seems the perfect catalyst to encourage all to bloom. Shake off any of those winter blues and re-ignite your passions.

As Picasso said, ‘Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.

Aside from the two abstract artists featured in the exhibit, Shake It Up incorporates graffiti images that in their inherent inception and intent is to shake things up, alongside mixed media creations that juxtapose images in unexpected and extraordinary ways.

Diamond dusted icons make an appearance because, as the endless tabloids exposed, they always shook things up. And then there are the photographs of legends who rattled the cage so loud it was deafening. But Shake It Up could not be complete without female-centric paintings that weave striking portraits with evocative narratives.

The Gallery at Green & Stone continues with the its Works on Paper exhibition that runs through February 20th. A salon-style show that features over 150 works in a wide array of artistic expression.

A big thank you to Green & Stone for including my piece, La Reine de Bâton, a 22 x 30 inch, pen and ink rendering of one of the Major Arcana cards in the tarot deck.

In this depiction, the Earth Goddess, Gaia, dispatches two emissaries to spread a message of being rather than doing, on deepening rather than producing and achieving. Process more important than product. A remembering of the natural rhythms of life and their unfolding in the cycles that govern nature. And, most importantly, a message of peace.

The entire catalog of works can be viewed on the gallery’s website: thegalleryatgreenandstone.com

Inspired by novelist, poet, scholar and Holocaust survivor, H.G. Adler, who wrote, "One must have a center, an unshakeable quiet space that one clings to vigorously, even when one is in the middle of the journey, the unavoidable journey."
