As musicians, we're going often told that we are childish or silly pursuing the arts. To seek it professionally we are told to have plan Bs because we'll lost likely fail or to pursue it as a hobby we are sniggered at behind our backs for putting so much time and money behind our passion.

If I wasn't fortunate enough to be creating music for a living, I would still pursue the creative act for the rest of my life. For me and others who do this, it's as important to our lives as eating. It's our food for the soul.

People are quick to dismiss those who pursue the creative life whilst still surrounding themselves with the things creatives make. Whether, it's the movies they watch, the music they listen to, the clothes they were etc, they seem to forget that these things only existed because people like us went against the social norms and pursued this life.

To just create!

Live synth jam created on the @wearenovation Summit for the drone, @ashunsoundmachines for the lead and @moogsynthesizers sub25 for the whaaaaaaaa!! Only effects were @@valhalladsp shimmer and vintageverb.

Firstly, apologies for the mic sound in this one. Tried using a different mic set up and well... the results weren't good!

Anyway, here's a few techniques you can use to create much thicker and fuller bass sounds. A great synth does bass well but there are some things you can do to make sure you're not getting in your own way in your patch.

First, I feel like phase is an often forgotten element when it comes to synthesis and sound design. Adding more elements to your bass can actually make it less bassy... go figure.

Secondly, your choice of Oscillator shapes matter... a lot. A sine wave sounds great when you have good bass response from your speakers but for most listening devices will completely disappear. Saw waves have too much harmonic information and therefore sound thin.

A square wave is a great place to start a bass patch because of it's more refinded harmonic sequence and greater emphasis on the fundamental frequency.

Lastly, once you have your patch, then you can assign a sine wave. You can think you have something that sounds massive, add a sine wave and your original sound will sound thin in comparison. Shakes those speakers and use the fundamental frequency, but only after dialling in a great sound.

Like and follow for more synth tricks.

I love little sound design tricks. To do this one you'll need a synth with looping envelopes and the ability to modulate the decay of your Amp Envelope.

A lot of records I make involve some level of cinematic sound design. These ideas and sounds are becoming more and more common even in charting records and mainstream artists, so the ability to pull up and design your own sound effects on the fly on your synthesizers is becoming a must-have skill.

This sound was inspired by @hanszimmer and his work on the @dunemovie soundtrack. Created and performed on the @wearenovation Summit including effects (because they are mindblowing good on this thing!)

MY NEW SONG “ALREADY GONE” IS FINALLY OUT!

I can’t tell you how much this song means to me. It was born from one of the most vivid and unusual experiences I’ve ever had, and seeing this story come to life through music and film feels incredibly special.

Some time ago, I had a vision of myself as a young girl living in a village, feeling misunderstood, rejected and completely alone. People thought she was strange, perhaps even a witch. Her only friend was an ancient, wizened tree.

Every night, she would visit the tree, which spoke to her in a language she somehow understood. It shared secrets about her family, the village and generations of people who had lived there. Most importantly, it offered her the love, comfort and understanding she couldn’t find anywhere else. It reminded her how special she was.

The experience felt so real that I sometimes wonder whether it was a memory from a previous life. I can’t know for certain, but it touched something deep within me and inspired **“Already Gone.”**

I’m so happy to finally share this piece of my inner world with you. I hope you love it as much as I do! 🧡

I've had constant requests to represent new AI music models and I refuse every single one. I'm not going to represent something that I believe is truly about taking the means of creation out of the hands of many who have worked hard all their life to earn it, to the hands of a few billionaires to profit from decades of people's hard earned creations. by @studiochimp

If you're a mix engineer or music producer and you do this, I'm calling you out.

I hear supposedly finished records from supposedly professional mix engineers with technical issues far too many times. Clocking issues, editing pops and cracks, major timing issues. If you're a pro, you should be telling your artist when these issues have occurred and either offer to fix them, or make sure the studio who recorded it does.

There are many things in making a record that are just people's opinions, but if a record is missing half the frequencies because the studio didn't set up their world clocks properly, or drums are out of phase, or edits haven't been crossed faded properly, then it's a technical fault, not an opinion. I'd rather lose the job than let it pass.

If you're not calling it out and just mixing or mastering the record, you're not being a pro. You're just taking people's money 🖤 by @studiochimp

One of the best bits of advice I ever got as a music producer was to treat every single record I'm making as the one that will be a hit and define my career. Give the production and mix every effort as if millions of people will hear it.

But, only the audience can tell you if it will be a hit. So once it's out, listen to them. If they love it, push it harder, if they don't, move on and make the next record.

This applies to artists even more than a producer. Make every song and record the best it can possibly be, like it's the one that will open every door. But if it doesn't, don't sweat it. Make more and keep pushing until you find your hit! by @studiochimp
