This was a special one.

A foray into mediaeval-esque candelabras. Produced using a process of oxide tinting byproduct from @keepcup product quality control.

@ryanfernandesdesign and Nic, Anaïs and team at @madebymorgan entrusted all the designers in @tactile_dialogues to be bold with their material statements. The quietly intimate dinner setting by @manze_melbourne set a beautiful aura to release these pieces into @ngvmelbourne #MelbourneDesignWeek

I've been blown away by the excited responses to these works. Kudos to all involved for such a great time over the last few days and for coming to say hello.

Artists:

Jessie French - Other Matter

Tactile Dialogues: Fragments of Matter invites audiences to experience fragmentation as both material and concept. A space where new forms, partial views, and traces of thought become the starting point for dialogue, curiosity, and reflection.

We've been in project proposal mode and it's always nice revisiting productions the Dokola team worked feverishly hard on.

Heat, gravity and time. Billy Crellin has spent 16 years learning to work against all three.

Inside his West Footscray studio, molten glass sits at 1200 degrees and the reheating chambers glow like small suns. It looks glamorous. It isn’t. It’s sweat, dirt and a material that’s always cooling faster than you’d like.

Billy came to glass through art school, chasing cheap materials for light and sound installations. What he found was a 3000 year old craft built on the master and apprentice model: years of assisting, years of copying, then the harder task of unlearning it all to find your own hand.

Now, with a studio (@studiodokolaglass) of his own and a crew of young makers around him, he’s gone back to foundations. Prototyping straight into the glass. Paying attention to the mistakes. Taking time to pause, which he admits he’s still getting better at.

@studiodokolaglass is a boutique glassblowing studio. I lit it with a single source to emulate afternoon light, which gave each frame depth.

What held my attention was the team. Glassblowing runs on timing, and there's no room to drift. Everyone stayed locked in, preparing and shaping the glass in real time, moving together like a dance until the final piece emerged.

The process is physical, but the mental side stayed with me. That level of focus, heat and precision must be exhausting, and I found myself watching the concentration as much as the craft. by @studiodokolaglass

Billy Crellin, the founder of @studiodokolaglass, spends his days working in an environment where the temperature is as demanding as the craft itself.

Glassblowing is a delicate balance of timing and control. By watching Billy at the furnace, you see the rhythm required to shape the material before it cools. It is a process that demands total focus, turning raw heat into something intentional and precise.
