La Carrossie is the reimagining of an existing home in Trinity, Jersey 🇯🇪 that had been subject to a series of additions and alterations over time, resulting in a house with generous accommodation, but compromised circulation, hierarchy and relationship between spaces.

Our proposal looks to rationalise those interventions rather than simply add another layer.

At ground floor, the plan is reorganised to create a clearer and more intuitive arrangement of spaces, while above, an existing conservatory-style addition is removed and the established roofline extended across its footprint — creating a much calmer architectural composition.

Materially, the new work takes its cues from the existing house and its surroundings, while a generous glazed gable opens the upper living spaces towards the landscape beyond.

A considered reworking of an existing home — retaining what works, resolving what doesn’t, and making the most of an already substantial footprint.

The most respectful response to an existing building isn’t to imitate it.

Our approach to The Old Schoolmaster’s project, was to allow old and new to remain distinctly legible — introducing contemporary additions that sit quietly alongside the character of the existing Victorian home rather than attempting to replicate it.

The visually-lightweight corner bi-folding doors that wrap around the dining space, topped with a flat sedum roof, form a connection between the existing house and the new studio; whilst also creating a deliberate pause in the architecture, opening up views and improving the relationship between the house, the new accommodation and the garden beyond.

The result is a series of interventions that feel clearly contemporary, but considered in their scale, proportion and relationship with what was already there.

New and old, connected — but not confused.

This design was developed to work with the natural fall of the site rather than trying to flatten or fight against it.

The new spaces step down around the existing stone farmhouse, becoming progressively embedded within the landscape. This became the underlying architectural language, while long rooflights bring daylight deep into the plan and a planted green roof helps the new intervention settle discretely into its rural setting. The result is a visually restrained addition that belies its substantial footprint, preserving the existing outlook and ensuring none of the principal views are compromised.

A sun room shaped by symmetry, light and landscape.

The existing stone house has a strong architectural order, with traditional gabled forms and an established extension to one side. Rather than treating the new addition in isolation, the proposal uses its position and proportion to re-establish balance across the composition of the house as a whole.

A simple gabled roof takes its cue from the existing architecture, but is detailed to appear as a lightweight plane floating above the new space. Full-height glazing wraps the south and west elevations, opening the room almost entirely to the garden, meadow and mature woodland beyond.

To the more private north elevation, a stone wall responds to the materiality of the original house, while a continuous ribbon of clerestory glazing separates it from the roof and maintains the impression of a floating structure.

A deliberately simple intervention, designed not just to add space, but to strengthen the relationship between the house and its setting.

Great architecture should do more than satisfy a brief. It should improve the lives of the people who use it, strengthen the places it belongs to, and respond meaningfully to the environmental challenges of our time.

People.

Every project begins with understanding how a building will actually be lived in, experienced and enjoyed. Through close collaboration with our clients, consultants and contractors, we aim to create architecture that is intuitive, personal and capable of adapting over time.

Place.

We don’t believe in imposing a predetermined style. Every site has its own landscape, history, climate, materials and character. Understanding those qualities allows contemporary architecture to belong to its setting without simply imitating what came before.

Planet.

Environmental responsibility begins with the architecture itself. Our fabric-first approach prioritises orientation, materials, insulation, airtightness, thoughtful detailing and long-term building performance before relying on technology to compensate.

Because sustainability isn’t only about how little energy a building uses.

It’s also about creating architecture that works well, ages well and is valued enough to endure.

Sometimes, responding to an existing building isn’t about copying its architecture. It’s about understanding its rhythm.

Set between a country manor and it’s guest cottage, this new contemporary orangery brings previously fragmented parts of the house together around a generous space for cooking, dining and entertaining.

The architecture takes its cue from the existing house: tall openings, repeated proportions and the rhythm of stone mullions become slender stone fins framing minimal glazing.

Above, the diamond pattern found within the manor’s leaded windows is reinterpreted in the new stone entablature — allowing a small detail from the original house to become a defining feature of the new. This project was less an exploration of form, and more a study of fenestration, proportion and material.

Old and new can speak the same language, without saying the same thing.

An old cottage, reimagined for contemporary family life.

Over time, a series of alterations and additions had left the house with an awkward arrangement of rooms, constrained circulation and little connection to the surrounding landscape.

Rather than simply adding more space, our approach began by reconsidering how the existing house worked as a whole.

The internal layout is reorganised around a clearer hierarchy of spaces, including a relocated staircase and improved connections between the quieter rooms of the original cottage and the principal family living areas.

A new addition to the south-west creates the heart of the home — bringing together kitchen, dining and family living within a light-filled space opening towards the garden and countryside beyond.

Its deliberately restrained architectural language allows old and new to remain distinct, while the simple overhanging roof and expansive glazing establish a much stronger relationship between home and landscape.

Set within rolling countryside, the Strata project reimagines an existing stone farmhouse through a substantial contemporary addition embedded into the natural gradient of the site.

Rather than extending the house as a continuation of its traditional form, the proposal establishes a distinct new layer within the landscape.

The existing farmhouse is retained and remodelled as self-contained guest accommodation, connected to the new home by a minimal frameless glass link. From here, the architecture steps down with the landscape — partially concealed within the slope before gradually emerging as the land falls away.

Natural stone, expansive glazing and a wildflower living roof allow the new building to establish its own contemporary identity while settling quietly into its rural setting.

Old and new remain deliberately distinct, connected by a shared relationship with the landscape.
