As we prepare for "GET DECKED" our upcoming holiday activation, we've discovered so many fun, bizarre and beautiful ornaments and decorative seasonal objects. Here's one of our favorites - a glass ornament of a box of glass ornaments! How perfectly meta! The most common of ornaments is the ever elegant glass ball, which traces their lineage to Germany.
🎄
German glass ornaments originated in the village of Lauscha, where 16th–19th century glassblowers transformed old folk traditions—like hanging apples and gilded nuts on “paradise trees”—into delicate hand-blown baubles. Through innovations in silvering and molding, these artisans created the shimmering fruits, figures, and spheres that soon spread across Europe and America, becoming iconic symbols of holiday décor. At Studio Hinterland, we look to these ornaments as small but enduring reminders of how craft, culture, and memory shape the way we celebrate and beautify our homes.
🎄
Shiny Brite ornaments began in 1937 when Max Eckardt partnered with Corning to craft American-made, silver-lined glass baubles—using adapted light-bulb machines to bring joyful, affordable décor to Woolworth’s shelves at the dawn of wartime scarcity. They quickly became mid-century icons, defining the bright, modern language of American holiday decorating.
🎄
Come celebrate the holidays with us and share your childhood memories of the aesthetic of the season! We'll be *Getting Decked* all weekend! ✨❄️🥂

We are so happy to welcome home the Clovelea Tea Hutch who spent several happy years in the "Liminal Space" waiting room at the Saugerties Wellness collective @clovelea - for which it is named. ☘️ Our first piece and perhaps the crown jewel of the Clovelea Collection, the tea hutch is a fresh, stunning example of a rather traditional style of furniture. We love her and the stately character AND functionality she adds to any space! Designed and built by @alisonzavracky_design in collaboration with @willowdeepstudio who contributed the glistening leaded glass door panes. Come see this grand dame in person at the Studio Hinterland Showroom (by appointment)

Swipe to meet the Pineapple Hutch - the inspo for a new piece (and maybe collection 🥹 from the SH). And if you've got the hutch bug RUN to @ulsterhabitatrestore for some VERY excellent vintage pieces priced to move.💨 🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏽‍♀️!

If you'd like to read more about the history of the Hutch and the design process for ours, head over to our stories for links to our recent blog post!

And if you'd like to inquire about the Clovelea Hutch or a custom piece feel free to DM!

Historically, the hutch started showing up in kitchens in the 18th century in England and France as a functional storage piece that also had a tabletop surface for food preparation or service.  Upper and lower cabinets housing drawers and shelves would keep cookware and utensils dust-free and safe from tiny unwanted intruders.  The hutch was indeed a multifunctional addition to any modern kitchen.  The fancier the hutch, the fancier its contents.  With glass doors, you could now keep your precious items safe, like your fine porcelain, while also displaying them - a common style in the 19th century as the Victorians loved to show off the good stuff.
✨
The Studio Hinterland hutch is indeed fancy - with brass details, leaded paned glass panels and beautifully crafted maple.  A long, slender bar runs the length to hang your most lovely tea cups.  Certainly, the Hutch could be used to store and display whatever your needs are. However, the "tea hutch" designation stems from why the piece was created in the first place and for whom….  And the creation of the Clovelea Tea Hutch is actually the story of the creation of Studio Hinterland…
✨
Read more about the Hutch, @clovelea and the origin of SH in our latest blog post. NOW LIVE.

Curves and Legs? Yes, please! Our Clovelea Nightstand's got both for days!
To create the curved corners for this sexy, funky and highly functional table, @alisonzavracky_design used a woodworking technique called "kerf bending" to create the exact shape required for her design. A kerf is a cut made by a saw, and when several cuts are made at equal increments the removal of this material allows the wood to become flexible.
✨
There’s always some trial and error when creating a wood curve like this, as each species will act a little bit differently, and there are many variables to consider when trying to achieve the desired radius. Using scrap pieces of maple planed to the desired thickness, Alison experimented with different kerf depths and spacing until she found a formula that worked. Process! Process! Process!
