Wheel thrown, Wood-fired at IIT Bombay, 2023

Forms inspired by the ‘Urli’. Function and funk~with the little twist on the handles, on a snowflake glaze and a toasty reduced bottom.

Wood firing is one of the most primal ways of firing. Its beauty is from the ash that flies from burning wood in the kiln, which deposits onto the pieces, with the movement of the fire. Creating an effect: most often times that one cannot replicate. Making them, each unique! The fire is the master and one surrenders to the process! 🔥🪵

Up for grabs at the Open Studio. This Sunday, 18th Oct, at our studio, 4:00pm - 7:00pm.

My brain only functions in semesters, and it has been another busy semester @studiokarva. These past few months, I got a chance to learn much more about studio management and processes from @rashi.jjain, in addition to deepening my practice in clay

Swipe for some semester highlights 🙂

Grateful as always for this space, teacher and mentor @rashi.jjain, and all co-travellers in clay

Some new bisque fired work, waiting patiently to be glazed and fired. These days, I'm drawn to full bellied, joyous forms, my very own, rather tubby Tweedledums and Tweedledees

I also displayed some of my pieces at our Open Studio, and sold my first ever pot, thanks to the kindness of friends 💕

Getting better at loading/unloading the kiln

Learning how to handle kiln mishaps

Learning how to make plaster bats for clay recycling with @ubikutty

Sometimes, glaze melts and flies off your piece and on to the shelf 🙄

Making test tiles and testing glazes

Chatty studio companion

Obsessing over bottles

And finally, listening for birdsong (we were lucky that a red-whiskered bulbul chose to build its nest amidst the studio plants) by @studiokarva

A few favourites from the last firing. Felt like the right time to share them before the next Open Studio.

@rashi.jjain took me back to one of the first forms she learnt at GBP. I’m still not sure if I got that form right, but somewhere between copying, correcting and pulling the clay again, it started becoming mine.

Ever grateful to learn from Rashi @studiokarva and to have a studio that gives me the space to keep trying, failing, learning and making❤️🤎❤️ by @studiokarva

Glazing days marked the final weekend for this batch 🫙

Every piece lovingly made was bisque fired, then glazed by the students.

Glazing always brings a little jitters, for beginners and experienced potters alike! What goes into the kiln looks nothing like what comes out.

Then came the seemingly unending wait: the glaze firing, and the even longer wait for the kiln to cool. ⏳

Happy to report that the kiln gods were kind to us 🙏 The results are beautiful, and we can’t wait to show them to you at our Open Studio on Sunday, 18th October!

Hope to see you all there.

The last few weekends (practice sessions over weekdays) the batch slowly and steadily has been learning the basics of wheel throwing in the Foundation Course.

Everyone in their own rhythm, has been finding their sync with centring, pulling, trimming, etc 🌸

We are now in the last weekend of our course, which will culminate at the Open Studio, coming Sunday. ✨

Over centring struggles, to adoring pieces to chugs of tea and laughter; we’ve grown in friendship amongst us and with clay! ☕️

We are glazing our works made over the course and eagerly waiting to review the results from the firing, at the Open Studio on 18th October!🪬

We hosted a morning workshop on 2nd Oct, for a group of mummas and kids. We did hand-building and a guided try at making a pot on the wheel. Many of them: first timers with clay!
🥳

Thank you @shilpa_creativity for the captures and assisting in the workshop.

Glimpse into our Clay Circle.2.

We enjoyed a reflective evening over tea and cookies, with fellow clay folk, while listening to stories from the traditional pottery villages of China and Larnai, Meghalaya.

Hope we can gather again soon!
