We’re getting ready for Beneath All Distance, a new exhibition by Cincinnati artist Erika NJ Allen @erika.nj.allen.studio , presented as part of the 2026 @fotofocuscincinnati i Biennial: The Long View.

Through pinhole and analog photography and ceramic surfaces, Allen explores landscapes shaped across immense spans of geological time—and what they reveal about memory, endurance, and our place within something much larger.

We Were There… (Part I and II)

26 tiles. A humble lesson in patience and an absolute testing of skill.
Taming the cyanotype process on bisque porcelain was a constant battle with the elements. The unpredictable chemical reaction between the iron compounds, the porous clay body, and ambient humidity created these unexpected, haunting, dream-like bands of Prussian blue, lavender and purple shifting through the skies. Managing the precise timing, moisture variables, and clearing baths was exhausting, but seeing these deep Prussian blue man-made landscape finally lock into place is incredibly rewarding.
This reel shows a glimpse of the finished tiles from my solo exhibition, Beneath All Distance. The completed series merges alternative process photography and ceramics to explore landscapes shaped by geological time and human history. These works reflect on how time and the land connect us all—sometimes without us even knowing it. That unseen thread that ties our shared histories, memories, and physical spaces together across immense spans of time is exactly what lies beneath all distance.
I’m incredibly proud to share this tile series alongside screen-printed pinhole images, translucent porcelain lampshades, and moving image installations featuring donated slides playing on an old-school projector, amongst others works.

This is a process reel where I talk about my findings working with Cyanotype on porcelain.
Simple takes after two months of testing:
- Bisque porcelain works best compared to stoneware or earthenware.
- Exposure matters! UV light works better than the sun.
- The amount of Cyanotype matters! Two coats of chemicals work better than one or three.
- Environment matters! Cool = Prussian blue, Humid = blueish and purple
- Length of wash/bath matters! 50 minutes each time, done twice.
- It is safe to add vinegar and hydrogen peroxide during baths. Not at the same time though.
- And for my specific project, working each tile separately works best = insane amount of labor. 30 tiles in total, plus test, after test, after test.

Am I done? Almost there! Few more days and I’ll add archival matte spray. Glossy doesn’t look the best.

It’s been a rewarding challenge to work on these tiles. And overall, they all work well with the subject of my solo show at @studiokroner for Fotofocus Biennial coming up in October.

Beneath All Distance presents Erika NJ Allen’s body of work that merges alternative photographic processes and ceramic surfaces. Working exclusively with pinhole and analog photography, the artist documents landscapes shaped by vast geological time — sites whose physical features bear visible traces of history, endurance, and change. These terrains serve both as subjects of visual inquiry and as catalysts for reflection on humanity’s place within a broader temporal continuum. Through analog processes, ancient landscapes, and durable materials, Allen’s work offers a meditation on scale, memory, and endurance across deep time.”
