Lisl and her snakes:

Lisl was an outlier. Just my kind of person. Spoke her mind, contrary, and weird (not to me) She used to drive (and I use that term loosely…) around in a bright orange Audi with her “pet” snakes-rubber and stuffed, scattered on the dash board. She loved those snakes and considered them her pets. When she got into yet another fender bender and could no longer drive, I don’t know what became of her snakes. She lamented that they were gone and was sad about it. For about a minute. Then it was on to conversations about the demise of humanity, art, and how she hated my glasses. I sure do miss my spirited and interesting friend. This was one of her favorite portraits of herself.

Happy International Women’s Day! Here’s to the next generation of women.

This portrait is timeless. It captures my daughter with our dog Tofu before she’s about to leave for college. A moment, time and place that will never happen again. Once she leaves for college, she will experience a significant change, and I wanted to capture her essence before this life transition. I adopted Tofu during the pandemic and though I knew she would be leaving for college soon, I wanted her to know what it meant to love a dog. The thing she misses the most, is Tofu.

After having experienced significant loss over the past several years, I have felt compelled to make portraits. My sisters and I have formal portraits of each of my parents when they were college age, and when they were little taken with extended family in China. The portraits look like they were taken from a movie set marking time, place, and history. We have lost this important tradition to preserve and value what is most important to us, to more content with less substance that exists in a cloud we never see. I lament over not taking portraits of my parents through their life stages, and see my portrait taking as a preservationist and documentarian in an era where we are losing our most precious resources.

Happy Gotcha Day Tofu!

Found wandering the streets of Georgia, painfully thin, with old stitches embedded beneath his right eye. Unclaimed for 10 days in animal control, followed by a 15 hour journey on a shuttle bus to Connecticut. Thank you @rescuedogsrocknyc

International Dog Day

Was founded by Colleen Paige, who adopted their first Sheltie from a shelter when she was 10. This day celebrates dogs of all kinds: Dogs that serve society, therapy, police, search and rescue, and to encourage adopting dogs from shelters.

In honor of International Dog day, I’m posting some portraits from my project series “A Seat at the Table.”

This series draws from a long visual tradition in which the table serves as both a literal and symbolic site of connection, ritual, and power. From Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper to domestic life in Dutch paintings, portraits at the table have historically reinforced social structures—who is invited, who is excluded, and what roles individuals play within the family or community.

The project started with something simple: noticing my dog eating alone on the kitchen floor while the rest of us sat at the table. It made me wonder what dogs perceive in spaces we’ve defined as ours, and what it might mean to include them into our daily routines. By bringing dogs to the table, this series playfully challenges those conventions, asking us to reconsider inherited ideas about hierarchy, species, and belonging.

There’s also humor in the imagined etiquette, the sideway glances, the bored stares, the social dynamics that emerge when a dog moves from the sidelines to the table itself. These portraits invite us to see our dogs not just as pets, but as full characters in the story of home—quiet witnesses, full of quirks, and impossible to exclude.
