☕️ I’ve had a lot of ideas for illustrations lately, but my brain and hand don’t seem to be speaking the same language, and none have gotten out of the sketch stage for 2 weeks.

Tonight I sat down with half an idea and no pressure on myself to make anything decent, let alone good. I just wanted to draw for an hour and see where it took me.

It’s not a damn fine drawing, but it’ll do for now. by @studiomeowww

Sometimes I have such a clear vision for what I want to draw, and the end result is close to what I started with. Most of the time, I start with a bunch of really terrible sketches in a spiral notebook and take little bits from each to form a more coherent idea. Then I do a sketch from that Frankenstein’s monster in Procreate, which is also when I sometimes try to figure out what brushes I’m going to use beforehand to get the look I’m going for, before moving that to my final canvas and making it all come together.

It’s always wild to see where I started and where I end up.

I’m happy with the concept but not the execution, but I think I’m calling it done and moving on after 2 days of going back and forth changing things. They can’t all be winners. 👀

For the first time since I started drawing, I’m in love with something I made and hours of planning paid off! I loved challenging myself to find ways to add interest and contrast without (much) color, and I think I’ll try to experiment with that more going forward.

Sometimes you just have to do the thing.

I’ve had the worst creative block. Usually I have ideas and just don’t have the skills to execute them, but the last few weeks, I don’t have the ideas or the skills. The combination leads to me feeling frozen and just wanting to give up, knowing I won’t be happy with whatever I draw. Knowing it won’t be good enough to share.

Here’s hoping that pushing through and drawing anyway will lead to becoming unblocked… eventually.

🍓I had a lot of fun drawing this for @kittyo.illustration’s lovely #dtiys! I feel like I’ve been shying away from color lately, so this was a good chance to push myself outside of my current comfort zone. (One day I’ll learn to draw hands and arms. Today is not that day.)
