The Unboxing: 1958 Smith-Corona Skyriter … Still needs some work, but am excited about this one: my first all-American typewriter … My 2027 vision is to get an air compressor and spray gun and start custom painting these in bright, flashy colors like hot pink, sky blue, aquamarine, and naples yellow. Stay tuned!

(tl;dr – fuk yea art hobbies) One month after I developed my first roll of 35mm film photography at home, I think it’s safe to say I’m nobody’s idea of a great photog. Or even a good one. But sixteen black & white rolls into this journey, I’m loving it. Developing light from the crystals in thin strips of plastic is a form of magic that I do not yet understand on any level but the practical — unspool the roll, reel it into a spool in a dark bag, make it light tight, add developer, then rinse, then fix, then rinse, then soap while you rinse and the light you saw through the viewfinder of a mechanical camera made in Japan forty years ago is captured, made, developed, revealed.

Obsession is where I’m at now in relationship to this analog medium the old guard insists is dying, but for a few weirdos like me resurrecting it in basement darkrooms. I disagree. In fact, I think film photography, like oil painting, is making a comeback in a big way. Throw “analog photography” or “35mm film” into the search bar of any of the bigs — IG, TikTok, YouTube — and people are sharing their passion for film. Best practices and happy accidents. Landscapes, street, abstract double exposures, and fine art nudes. Analog, bro, which makes total sense because the screentime is killing us as a species.

Oil painting was always a special side hustle when I was down and out because it took me off phones and laptops. After a while I even stopped using my iPad for reference photos and began printing them out. It takes screens completely out of the equation when I was getting my art on. Film photography, especially when developing it by hand, is a process that predates AND precludes getting on your screen. Can't scroll with two hands in a dark bag. Can’t text with two hands on a fully mechanical, manual focus camera. No DMs in a dark room. No pixels in an OG enlarger. Just light and chemistry and timing and projection of black, white, greys, and grain on a print from a negative that exists in no cloud. Only in reality
