Ever wondered what it feels like to be the rain, the pavement, or a tree in London?

At Whitechapel Gallery, we explored Aldgate from new perspectives, imagined impossible futures, and asked:

Who actually benefits from the cities we create?

We ended the evening with Hägendorf 2100 - a future imagined by 250 children.

Thanks to @nilay.iso for the great recordings! by @studioportmann

Imagine the Future if East London - Workshop at Whitechapel Gallery last Thursday as a part of Backyard Biennial. Together with a lovely group we playfully discovered the space in front of Whitechapel Gallery in a new perspective. Some slip into the role of the pavement, a pigeon or a shopowner, while others became the rain a building or a tree. In groups we questioned what do we like about this place and are we even included or rather excluded?

Starting from that we put our future glasses on and looked into our own utopia of East London. In groups we crafted different utopias from a diverse field of perspectives. It was much fun, thanks to all who came.

Big thanks to @nilay.iso for the great photographs🫶🏻
Further, thanks to @whitechapelgallery hosting my workshop and preparing such a nice space, and thanks to @jacek_arte for the opportunity! by @studioportmann
