Crocheted doilies, lace, and runners—once made with care, now often forgotten in attics, their making skills largely lost—form the foundation of our installation CONSERVE. By taking up these textile relics of our foremothers, we bring them into a new context, not out of nostalgia, but to honour the patience and dedication of the women who created them.

Salt crystals grow over the fragile fabrics, symbolically preserving the craft. In this way, the careful work—so often dismissed as mere “domestic craft”—is recognised and given new value.

The work views impermanence not as loss, but as transformation. It honours a quiet knowledge that embodies care and attention. CONSERVE is a material reflection on aging, staging these handcrafted textiles in a new context as a contemporary chandelier. by @studioppl.design

Ever heard of bobbin lace? Watch as Leopoldine brings this centuries-old craft—known in German as Klöppeln—to life with skill and patience. Each movement is precise, each pattern a work of art.

The name “Klöppeln” comes from the wooden bobbins (Klöppel in German) used to hold and manage threads. These threads are woven over a lace pillow and pinned into intricate patterns using detailed templates.

Laura Burtscher’s practice spans illustration, graphic design, sculptural work, and installations. By deconstructing and reassembling form, space, and material, she creates works that often incorporate playful elements. She studied Manual and Material Culture (BA) at New Design University, St. Pölten, and Graphic Design (MA, Mag. Art) at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.

PAULA FIEGL holds an MA in Interior Architecture and Visual Communication and a BA in Material and Material Culture from New Design University, St. Pölten. Her practice explores the atmospheric and transformative qualities of color in spatial design, always interacts with the given structure, and aims to uplift the mood through her design. She lives and works in Vienna with her dog Toni.

PETRA WIESER is a designer and ceramist whose work explores the everyday objects that subtly shape our actions. She studied Manual and Material Culture (BA) at New Design University, St. Pölten, and later founded her studio Mindful Design and Craft. The first material that truly captured our fascination—and finally led to our collaboration—is salt. At first it may sound rather trivial because we all use it regularly without reflecting on its capabilities. But salt is far more than just an ingredient in our food. It interacts with its environment, it creates and decomposes, it conserves and crystallizes.
