‘The collection was never meant to represent South Asian culture in its entirety. That would be impossible.

Instead, I was drawn to…things I grew up around.

But the more I think about it, the more I wonder whether that familiarity is mine alone.’

Why does this feel familiar? - the latest journal entry is now up.

I was recently asked: What’s something people don’t necessarily see about you or your work?

My answer: how involved I am in the creative side of SP. Beyond the pieces themselves, I love creating the world around them.

We take cues from the old and familiar, then give them a little something new. Designing our pop-ups is one of my favourite ways to do that and to let the more contemporary side of Purani come out to play.

So, a little behind the scenes of our Cabbagetown Festival pop-up.

It starts with a sketch: imagining the pop-up as a dining room you’ve just walked into.

That sparked the idea for our invitation cards - doubling as our brand cards so they’re actually useful and (hopefully) not immediately discarded.

Use one as a postcard, an invitation, a little note to someone - or just put it up on the fridge.

I wanted to repurpose our shipping crates to hold our signage rather than let them go to waste.

I was inspired by the wonderfully over-the-top imagery you find painted on trucks in Pakistan and just started painting from memory.

A few hand-cut paper pomegranates to fill some of the empty spaces. Because apparently, there is no such thing as too many pomegranates.

Straw lampshades, borrowed from home, for a little extra warmth and texture. And then, quite unexpectedly, dinner and a show!

And then someone drew our pop-up on the sign-up sheet. This makes it all worth it in the end.

Thank you so much to everyone who stopped by!

The response was honestly the best we could have hoped for and such a lovely way to celebrate one year of Studio Purani 🩵 by @studiopurani

No clever caption.

Will you please just come to our pop-up at Cabbagetown Festival on September 12 & 13?

To celebrate SP turning one, we’re also bringing some extra invites.

Come by, pick one up, and send it to someone you haven’t seen in a while.

And who knows - maybe the invitation will find its way back to you 💌👀 by @studiopurani
