'Anywhere But Now' is on view!
I feel this body of works, which I named Particle Paintings, has evolved so much in the last couple of years, and is only getting deeper and deeper into that nomadic human condition I wish to express.
What began with a pure emotional reaction to my mom's Shabbat candles back in 2017, is still in the air for me, still an exploration that excites me (this time with my wife's candles).
Light, air, the space of the image, and how one can transcend elsewhere through it, it is all there in this show..
I want to thank @annazorinagallery for giving me this beautiful opportunity. I also want to thank @aaronlevigarvey for his contribution of illuminating insights about the flickering light of the candle 🕯️
And of course to all my amazing friends and the people who came to the opening and cast so much love into that launching moment 🪬

We are pleased to present Anywhere but Now, a solo exhibition by Ron Chen. The show will feature artist’s newest series of paintings centered on performance. Through countless marks of paint and layered surfaces, Chen explores the tension between memory and the desire to be elsewhere while reminding us of the power of being present.

Join us for the opening reception on Thursday, July 9th, 6-8pm.

Today 14 works left the studio to New York, and I am deeply grateful and restlessly waiting to open this new chapter with a body of works I've been working on for almost a year now..

FAZAL/ ‘Performers’ by RON CHEN

The work belongs to a cycle of paintings I call ‘Particle Paintings’ in which I paint images from observation. I started to paint images back in 2017 because I felt that the image, the space it creates, is actually the most comforting and available place I can escape to.

Therefore, I am interested in the image as a space, where one can move in to and out from. That is why the technique I use has a certain mechanism of movement: in and out, forward and backward, (like dabbing) to eventually create a space that is penetrable.

This specific work depicts a subject I only recently started to work with- performers. This subject allows me to deal with drama in the most explicit way. To depict a stage with performs on it, for me is basically reflecting what an image is, and more specifically, what painting is about, a gateway, an alternative for the physical reality.

The technique I use, comments explicitly on the poetic and physical potential of paint to depict light. I create the illusion of space by literally piling paint layers on top of each other until the image starts to ‘breath’ and a sense of air is created.

Performers on a stage interest me as a subject especially because the figures lose their subjectivity and become a spectacle for the entertainment of others. Through this body of works, I can reflect on the nature of my relationship with images, which is torn between the tactile and the ungraspable, and is based on longing for a safe place to escape to.

I aspire for a disturbing tactile quality, that changes between a closer look and remote one. From up close you can feel the paint, the materiality of it and the abstract way in which it was put, but when you step away from the work it appears dreamy and ghostly, almost fragile.

Painted about 5 years ago, inspired by the whiteness, filled with pure light as some sort of evacuation solution for the unbearable present..
