Scent can be part of how a space is designed.

With Scent Architecture, I work alongside interior designers to translate the visual language of a space into scent.

Materials, colours, textures, architecture and atmosphere all become part of the process.

The result is a fragrance that doesn’t feel added to the space, but belongs within it.

Another sensory layer to the design.

Grasse is a big part of my work, but it’s not necessarily where the work begins.

When I’m here, it’s about being in the lab, smelling, discussing, tweaking and getting the fragrance exactly where it needs to be.

And then there’s everything else Grasse has to offer. A visit to the perfume museum, where I somehow learn something new every time — even from stories I’ve read before. Some very necessary violet and jasmine ice cream, good food, and plenty of time to take it all in.

It’s hard to complain when this is what a work trip looks like. by @studioscentior

One of the most interesting parts of scent design is that no two projects ask for quite the same thing.

A fragrance for a person, a scent for a space, or an object created in collaboration with an artist all require a different way of thinking. The references change, the constraints change, and what feels right for one project may not work for another.

That’s what I enjoy about the work. It brings together creativity, observation, collaboration and a fair amount of experimentation.

And somewhere between the first idea and the final result, you arrive at something that feels like it belongs.

That’s always the goal. šŸ¤ by @studioscentior

Flowers may get most of the attention in perfumery, but they’re only one part of the story.

Leaves, fruits, roots, bark and seeds all bring their own character to a fragrance. From the green freshness of leaves to the earthy depth of roots and the warmth of bark, each offers a different palette for a Scent Designer to work with.

What I find fascinating is how these materials, each with their own distinct personality, can come together to create something that feels entirely new. An ingredient that might seem unremarkable on its own can become an essential part of a much bigger picture.

Perhaps that’s one of the most interesting things about working with fragrance: learning to look beyond the obvious, and discovering just how much there is to work with. 🌿 by @studioscentior

Saint Laurent has always had such a strong sense of atmosphere, and this show was no different.

For me, it was a perfect example of how a strong visual identity can be translated into fragrance.

Not by simply matching colours or materials, but by capturing the mood, contrast and feeling the show creates.

That is the starting point for Dark Gold, my olfactory interpretation of the setting.

Because scent can add another layer to the sensory experience , transforming a visual world into an atmosphere you can not only see, but smell, feel and experience. by @studioscentior

Sometimes I think one of the best parts of running a creative business is not knowing where the next project is going to come from.

One conversation can lead somewhere you never expected.

I love that scent design allows me to
work across so many worlds. Fashion, hospitality, spaces, people, stories.
Every project asks for something different, and that’s what keeps giving me the creative freedom and energy.

A very quick trip, a very beautiful project, and a reminder that you really never know where a DM might take you. ✨ by @studioscentior

A perfume formula may be carefully controlled, but the experience of wearing it isn’t.

Once fragrance meets the skin, it enters a much more dynamic environment. Temperature, moisture, natural skin oils and the surrounding air can all influence how volatile fragrance materials move and evaporate.

And then there’s something even more interesting: perception.

The way you experience a fragrance is shaped not only by what reaches your nose, but also by context, familiarity and the associations your brain has built around certain smells.

Which is why testing a fragrance on a blotter can tell you what the composition smells like, but wearing it tells you something else entirely.

The formula is fixed. The experience isn’t. by @studioscentior

There’s a reason certain fragrances feel like they belong to a particular season.

It often comes down to the materials we associate with that time of year: bright citrus and aromatic notes feel naturally suited to summer, while richer woods, leather and spices tend to feel more at home in colder months.

Of course, there are no rules in perfumery. These are associations, not formulas.

But understanding them can be a useful way to think about fragrance and why the same scent can feel completely different depending on when you wear it.

There is something deeply fascinating about Kōdō.

In the Japanese tradition of incense, fragrance is not simply something to smell. It is something to experience.

Aromatic materials are approached slowly and deliberately - noticing their character, their nuances, their evolution. Not asking whether a scent is ā€œgoodā€, but allowing it to reveal itself.

It is an approach that feels increasingly relevant today.

We are surrounded by fragrance designed to be immediate, recognisable and instantly understood.

Kōdō invites us to do the opposite.

To slow down.
To pay attention.
To notice what changes.

Because perhaps the true power of fragrance is not in how strongly it fills a space, but in how deeply it makes us experience it.

Scent is not only something we perceive.
It is something we learn to notice. by @studioscentior

We experience much more than what is immediately in front of us.

A space, a meal, a hotel, a product, even a moment with someone - our perception is built from multiple sensory cues working together. Sight may establish the first impression, but sound, texture, temperature, taste and scent all contribute to what the experience ultimately feels like.

This is the foundation of sensory design: deliberately considering the senses as part of how an experience is designed and remembered.

Because sometimes, the details you never consciously notice are the ones that shape the experience most. by @studioscentior

There’s a reason certain colours seem to ā€œbelongā€ to certain smells.

Our brains don’t process the senses entirely in isolation. Research on crossmodal correspondences shows that people often make consistent associations between different sensory attributes, including colour, taste, sound and smell.

In fragrance, this matters more than you might think. A deep red can make a scent feel richer or warmer, while pale greens and blues are often associated with freshness and lighter compositions.

The colour isn’t changing the fragrance itself. It’s changing the expectation you bring to it.

And that expectation can influence how you perceive the scent. by @studioscentior

What if your bathroom could smell as good as it feels?

A few simple scent changes can completely shift how a bathroom feels. From eucalyptus in the shower to an essential-oil cotton pad or a porous ceramic diffuser, the key is understanding how fragrance behaves in the space.

Warmth, airflow, humidity and the material carrying the scent can all affect how it diffuses.

Because creating a beautiful-smelling space isn’t always about adding more fragrance. Sometimes, it’s about knowing how to make the most of it.

Which one would you try? by @studioscentior
