HUGE shout to @byabigailwillis. Abigail had gotten ahold of a bunch of deadstock sterling medallions, and I mentioned my idea of engraving the title onto some of them to sell with copies of my book. She (extremely kindly) said she would make me one. She engraved the words with a machine purchased from a jeweler that was going out of business... the jeweler was, very funnily and weirdly, located in the town nestled next to the one where I grew up (I remember the shop so clearly!!!)

*it seems there's been an error and the N in softness is an R... but tbh? I dont even mind it. a reflection of human error that is in my book. it somehow makes even more sense to me. thanks for pointing it out @ohelloheyhi ! by @studiosecondsight

My maternal grandmother was a seamstress. Her sewing machine let out tranquil hums as I watched episodes of "Hey Arnold!" and "Doug" from her living room - the sound became integral to my visits to her apartment, thread whirring through sheaths of fabric, spools of thread spiraling. I plastered the walls of my bedroom with editorials from Teen Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, gushing over textured textiles and structured garments, wishing I could run my hand across each. I mend when I can, but I have never learned to sew, or quilt for that matter - maybe one day.

When @goldolegrayson asked me if I'd like her to make me anything for my book launch, I partially didn't want to say yes - not for lack of want, but for the hours of frustration and labor I knew sewing could incur. How could I ask her, or accept her, to do that for me? Why would someone put in the time, effort, money, just for my benefit? The idea was uncanny. It still is. I am baffled by her talent, just as I am her choice to gift me such kindness. I know I deserve that kindness in my life, we all do, but that doesn't make it easier to accept.

As I've been writing Searching for Softness, I've been confronted with the many reasons my brain works the way it does, why these acts of kindness can feel uncomfortable, why I feel unworthy of them, why they pang my heart in an unusually warm, sentimental way, ways that usually make me cry or sob, becoming snotty and swollen, more than the average person. I've been more depressed than I've been in years as I've come to, again and again, every time I edit, every time I revise, every time I try to write again. I'm going back to EMDR, I'm getting back on medication.

I have so much gratitude for those of you who have shared my posts about the book. Thank you for pre-ordering, for buying stickers and hats and zines. If you haven't already, you can head to ceciliamajzoub.bigcartel.com for the goods - I can't wait to share it with you. Looking at Winter 2026 as of right now. Thanks for reading, as always. And thank you to Grayson for being such a thoughtful friend and person in this world, we need more people like her, sharing their innate kindness. by @studiosecondsight
