Katrina Baby nail set in honor of this week of remembrance as New Orleans is observing the 21st anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

I will never forget the experience of when I was 5 years old and being scared because we had to leave home and evacuate to Houston two days before the storm hit. We all just wanted to gather together to make sure everyone was safe so about 6/8 of my moms siblings traveled with their partners and kids, which resulted in over 20 family members living together in my teedee house for a few days.

I was too young to understand why the adults were so sad and distraught, I was happy to have all my cousins around but it was still a heavy feeling in the air. Living through the past 21 years has definitely made it painfully clear why this was such an impactful storm. Katrina is still on record as the costliest hurricane in U.S history. Over $200 billion in damages. And it has taken decades to fully recover from all the loss. taken in New Orleans, Louisiana by @studiosstroyed

✨Watch until the end to see the full process✨

“Walk us through your process when making the wave”—
When @jomanidanielle asked me this question during our Artists Talk for Water No Get Enemy i tried to quickly summarize this 4 day fabrication project but i knew no words could explain, so my ultimate answer would be to just trust the process. When creating my installations, I always go into it with a plan but after time and time again of being forced to surrender to the art of the pivot, I have i realized that everything happens just as it should when i let the spirit guide me and take control. Id rather show you better than I can tell you. I hope you appreciate this video I created to show you guys my unique and chaotic process. There is absolutely NO guide to being a set designer. I just jump in the field and figure it out.

Thank you to @artcrawlharlem & @governorsisland for providing the space & opportunity that housed my creation. taken in New York, New York by @studiosstroyed

In honor of Juneteenth I would like to post my favorite moments from the recent @thebsuatfit Cultural Explosion titled “Soul: The Legacy” that I had the pleasure of producing along side the other members of the Executive Board. There were so many talented people that contributed to bringing this vision together. From the models, to our beauty team, to the performers, this was truly a star studded experience.

Featuring Live musical interludes by the Trap Music Orchestra @tmorchestra, Nia Curry @niaa.curry , & Diva Davanna @divadavannarunway

Its only right that I give my new piece “We Desire To Be Perceived” the proper space to exist in its own moment. I have been working on this as a part of a larger collection for the past 2 years. I have been taking time away from sharing art as consistently as I once was while doing alot of shadow work to find clarity on many things that have been weighing on me. This is a start to releasing some of that energy.

I finished this piece just in time to be apart this past Black History Month Art Exhibition “Welcome Home” at FIT. Please enjoy a part of the curatorial explanation by @jomanidanielle on slide 4. taken in New York, New York by @studiosstroyed

YAYA Alumni Scholar Spotlight: @studiosstroyed. Stay tuned for more Grantees and Scholars. Learn and see more at anadeline.org.

Starr Solié Smith is pursuing a BFA in Spatial Experience Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City. She is a visual artist, graphic designer, and aspiring spatial experience and exhibition designer. “I plan to pursue a career designing & curating artistically driven exhibits and pop up activations for museums, events, brands,” says Smith, whose newfound knowledge of art history, craftsmanship, materiality, and advanced design principles has equipped her to focus on large-scale installation and exhibition design within New York City’s art and fashion scenes.

She credits the French and Spanish architecture of New Orleans with seeding her understanding of design’s history through the lens of culture. “I am dreaming of making artwork that changes the lives of people in the communities that have molded me into the person that I am today. I believe that art can inspire the minds of a generation, therefore I believe it is important to invest in the beautification of our communities and specifically urban areas that have been historically under funded and neglected,” says Smith, who is researching and developing design solutions to aid with disaster recovery and urban redevelopment for her thesis capstone project.

Smith is currently interning for Center Stage Productions, a display and design firm. She also serves as Vice President of FIT’s Black Student Union whose mission is to foster community and provide a safe space for Black students on campus to grow and develop relationships that will last beyond their time at FIT. She plans to study abroad in the Dominican Republic to complete her required language course.

Smith earned an AAS in Communication Design Foundation and an AAS in Fine Art from FIT before beginning the BFA program. She first joined the YAYA Guild in 2013. by @studiosstroyed
