REMINDER: you deserve days off AND reinforcement.

@studynotesaba and I did both yesterday 🎉🎉🎉

(This reinforcement was delayed almost 2 years…1/5 don’t recommend delaying consequences that long lol)

(& TBH both talked about how guilty we feel for taking a DAY off of work…but it was intentional and needed 💕)

Be pissed. Cry in the parking lot. Question every acronym you’ve ever learned. Take the day off. 🤍

But please don’t turn one exam result into a story about who you are or what kind of BCBA you’ll become.

You didn’t lose everything you learned.
You didn’t lose the hours you put in.
And you sure as hell didn’t lose your ability to try again.

This is a data point. Not your identity.

We regroup. We adjust. We go again, boo.

Before you call something “behavior,” ask yourself one slightly morbid question:

💀 Could a dead person do it?

If the answer is yes, it’s probably NOT behavior.

“Not talking.”
“Not hitting.”
“Not leaving their seat.”

Our deceased friend is absolutely crushing all three. 🪦

Behavior is the activity of a living organism, which is why we want to define what someone IS doing, not simply the absence of an action.

Instead of “doesn’t yell” → “speaks at conversational volume.”

Instead of “doesn’t leave their seat” → “remains seated with their body in the chair.”

And when you write those operational definitions, remember COCO:

🥥 Clear
🥥 Observable
🥥 Concise
🥥 Objective

If two people can read your definition, observe the same person, and reliably agree whether the behavior occurred…we’re cooking.

If a dead guy can do it…back to the operational-definition drawing board, bestie. 💀

Multiple baseline logic = prediction, verification, and replication doing their little experimental-control group project. 📊

Here’s what’s happening:

💗 Prediction: Baseline tells us what we expect behavior to look like if the IV isn’t introduced. Each untreated tier gives us another prediction of where behavior should stay.

💚 Verification: When behavior changes in the tier receiving treatment while the untreated tiers remain around baseline levels, those untreated tiers help verify that behavior likely would’ve stayed the same without the IV.

💜 Replication: Then we introduce the IV to the next tier…and the behavior changes again. Same functional relation, different tier. Replication, baby.

So instead of withdrawing an effective intervention, multiple baseline demonstrates experimental control by staggering the IV across behaviors, settings, or participants and showing the effect repeatedly.

Think:
predict → verify → replicate → “okay yeah, that IV is IV-ing.”

Save this one for the exam because Cooper absolutely wants you to know these three. 🫡📈

The best BCBAs aren’t the ones who always have the answer.

They’re the ones who stay curious enough to keep looking for a better one.

They ask questions. They listen. They look at the data again. They admit when something isn’t working and change course.

Because “I don’t know yet” isn’t incompetence.

Sometimes it’s the beginning of really good behavior analysis. 🤍

Contingency-shaped behavior = learning because you EXPERIENCED the consequences yourself.

Nobody gave you the rule. Nobody explained the contingency. Life said “here’s some data” and you adjusted accordingly. 💀

In this example:

Behavior: make out with frat star
⬇️
Consequence: get herpes
⬇️
Future behavior: maybe don’t make out with frat star

The consequence directly changes the future probability of the behavior.

✨ CONTINGENCY-SHAPED = I learned by EXPERIENCE

Compare that with:

✨ RULE-GOVERNED = I learned from someone TELLING me the contingency

Your friend says:

“If you make out with that man, you’re gonna get herpes.”

…and you avoid him despite never personally experiencing that consequence?

That’s behavior controlled by a verbal description of the contingency, aka rule-governed behavior.

Test-day cheat code:

Contingency-shaped:
DO → CONSEQUENCE → LEARN

Rule-governed:
HEAR/READ RULE → BEHAVIOR CHANGES

One said “I was warned.”

The other said “I had to see for myself.”

Unfortunately, both are learning. 🫶
