🧬 Restriction Enzymes: Types & Key Differences ✂️

Restriction endonucleases are enzymes that recognize specific DNA sequences and cleave DNA at defined sites. They play a crucial role in recombinant DNA technology and genetic engineering.

🔬 Types of Restriction Enzymes

Type I • Recognize specific DNA sequences but cleave DNA far away from the recognition site. • Require ATP, S-adenosyl methionine (SAM) and Mg²⁺.

Type II • Usually cleave DNA within or close to their recognition sequence. • Generally require Mg²⁺ and are widely used in genetic engineering.

Type III • Recognize specific DNA sequences and cleave DNA a short distance away from the recognition site. • Require ATP, SAM and Mg²⁺.

🎯 EXAM QUICK REVISION Type I → Cleavage far from the recognition site
Type II → Cleavage within or near the recognition site
Type III → Cleavage a short distance away

💡 Remember: Type II restriction enzymes are the most widely used in recombinant DNA technology because of their predictable cleavage patterns.

📝 Test yourself: Which type of restriction enzyme is most commonly used in genetic engineering?

🦠 Why are some bacteria no longer affected by antibiotics?

This is called ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE! 🔬

💊 Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria develop the ability to survive and multiply despite exposure to an antibiotic that would normally affect them.

🧬 How does it happen? • Random mutations can make some bacteria resistant. • Bacteria can acquire resistance genes from other bacteria. • Antibiotic use creates selection pressure, allowing resistant bacteria to survive and multiply.

📚 Exam takeaway: Antibiotic resistance is a property of bacteria—not the human body becoming resistant to antibiotics.

⚠️ Misuse and overuse of antibiotics can accelerate the spread of resistance.

❓ Quick quiz: What is the survival and multiplication of resistant bacteria after antibiotic exposure called?

Comment your answer! 👇

🧬✂️ Restriction Enzymes — The Molecular Scissors of DNA!

Restriction enzymes are endonucleases that cut DNA at specific nucleotide sequences called recognition sites.

🔬 Key Exam Points: • They recognise specific DNA sequences.
• They cut DNA at or near the recognition site.
• Many recognition sequences are palindromic.
• They can produce sticky ends or blunt ends.
• They are widely used in recombinant DNA technology and gene cloning.

📌 Example:
EcoRI recognises the sequence 5′-GAATTC-3′ and produces sticky ends.
