From early August’s midnight journal:

After my favorite morning drive-to-work chat with my best friend, and seeing so much on here that seems to hold happiness up as the ultimate measure of a good life, I’ve been thinking about how strange it is that we’ve decided one emotion is the goal. I don’t think we’re meant to be happy all the time. And I don’t think a life well lived is one where we somehow figure out how to be.

There are seasons of life that are light and others that are incredibly heavy, and I think they give each other meaning. You recognize the warmth of being happy because you remember what it was like to be sad. You know when something feels light because you’ve carried things that were heavy. We spend so much time trying to get back to happiness that sometimes we forget there is value in simply allowing ourselves to feel whatever is actually there.

Maybe the goal isn’t to be happy. Maybe it’s to be present enough for all of it. To let the good feel good, to let the hard be hard, and to know that neither will last forever. There’s something comforting about that.

I’m quite happy with my little 200 person corner of the internet, where I’m lucky enough to know every one of you by name and even luckier to call many of you friends. by @stuffbymarge

“Earth has no sorrow that heaven can’t heal” Isaiah 35:10. The pain of loss on earth can’t compare to the joy of knowing that we get to live in eternity with you because of Jesus. There is no greater friendship than the one that points you toward Him. And that will always be my Danielle. I pray that we can love God as loudly, genuinely and proudly as you did. 💛 I love you by @stuffbymarge
