🎨✨Making Plans✨🎨

We are ending of our first week of school. Just Math and Language Arts during week 1, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It has given us the ease and flexibility to adjust the schedule and get our supplies in order.

I’m finding myself so thankful to the @the.cmec for their wonderful guides they provide to their members, especially for picture study. ✨🖼️ Can’t wait to dive in!

We are studying Corot for Term 1. We will enjoy and observe 6 paintings, one painting will cover two weeks. I’m able to divide our lessons as such:

🫟WK1: Observe and discuss
🫟WK2: Discuss and draw

The kids love creating their own renditions of the art they study. It creates a lovely way to immerse ourselves. ✨📚🖼️

👩🏻‍🎨Are you doing Picture Study? It is one of our favorite subjects! by @stxschoolhouse

✨📚1st Week of School 📚✨

Planning our soft start this week and it feels incredible. We have all been eagerly ready to return to lessons and routine (maybe me more than most 😉).

I don’t consider this the first official week of our term because it doesn’t consist of a full feast of work (hist, science etc), but it does encourage our minds to begin thinking and moving.

📝Reviewing our timetable and expectations for the term
✨Math
📝Language Arts
✨Afternoon Habits and Occupations
📝 Preparing independence by knowing where their material and notebooks are
✨ Nature Study , Art, and Handwork set up

By including the children in the set up of notebooks, art materials, etc, I’m able to set a bar of responsibility right at the beginning. This year I will have a 4th Grader (Form 2B) and a 2nd Grader (Form 1ALower) with a Preschooler in tow.

Let’s begin! 🏹🫶✨ have you begun your school year? by @stxschoolhouse

📚Preparing the School Room📚

As our school start date inches closer ~ I’ve adjusted to full start Aug 17 ~ I have been preparing the classroom aka my dining room to highlight topics we will be covering in the first term.

🪐Astronomy - 4th grade general science
🐞Insects - 2nd and 4th grade nature special studies
🐟Seashore Creatures - 2nd grade natural history
🌲Kingdom and Classifications - 4th grade natural history

I love using reference books that have bold and exciting images to lend into their learning and creative minds as they narrate. 📚 We are using @the.cmec as our spine.

Using our daily calendar we will focus on the phases of the moon , autumnal changes, and night nature walks to view the stars above ✨

How are you preparing for the year? We love setting up the schoolroom for success! by @stxschoolhouse

✨ Pre-reading Subject Rotation ✨

As I’ve closed on Term 1 , it’s time to begin preparing for Terms 2 and 3. Personally, I feel best prepared for the year if I have it all done during the summer. 📚✨

I have found rotating subjects or topics allows your brain to flex and breathe in a rhythmic way. Instead of reading all through the Book of Matthew, I’ve alternated History and Science.

Each subject adjusting my mind to think differently - just in the way we move between subjects on the timetable.

How are you approaching preparing for the year? Do you use digital or handwritten notes?

📕 Language Arts- 2nd Grade 📕

What a beast LA is. So many components that build on each other! The reading journey for my middle hasn’t been easy but everyday she grows, builds confident, and improves - that’s all that matters! 😊 This year we are using the following!

📕Reading: Art of Reading + TGTB Lv 1 Readers
🔠Phonics: ETC 2/3
🖍️Spelling: AAS1
✒️Grammar: Growing with Grammar 1
📝Writing: TGTB Handwriting Lv 1/2 + Building Writers + Daily Copywork
📚Literature (not shown): 1 Classic Novel per term + Greek Mythology - daily oral narrations

What reading program are you using? Does LA scare you as much as it scares me to teach sometimes? 🙃 #raisingreaders by @stxschoolhouse

📕Books my 9yo (almost 10) is Currently Reading📗

This year there has been shift. Growing from short chapter books to larger and longer novels has been challenging! Not because of reading fluency but the mindset of longer text and less pictures in a book.

I’ve tried a lot of different books and series to help him stretch from shorter chapter books to longer texts. Dart selection from Brave writer has been amazing for that! We will continue with their booklist next year as well.

So far both of these series have been a hit and have kept him interested, intrigued, and wanting to read more!!

✨PreReading: Preparing for a New Year + Tips✨

📕📗📘📙📙
- Work slowly and deliberately

- Pre-read books and things you plan to have your child narrate or work with. All else you can enjoy together or they will in their free time.

- Small tabs to track when to read depending on week or lesson. They serve as a general goal!

- Medium to large post it’s to insert in the book with questions or narration ideas for the independent reader

- Rotate reading subjects to keep your mind fresh and interested

- Read an entire term, then move on to the next. (In case you run out of time during the summer or would like to continue prereading the following terms in later seasons).

- Keep a book always in your purse. Feel the urge to scroll? Read instead! Make it a habit 👌🏻

- Enjoy the ride, what a beautiful thing it is to learn alongside our children!! ✨📕

Do you pre-read before the school year begins? What does that look like for you? What are your goals? Any other tips?? Please share below! ⬇️ by @stxschoolhouse

📘📗2026-2027 Literature📙📕

I am SO excited to begin pulling books from shelves and prepare for @the.cmec curriculum drop in April!

We will have a rising Form 1ALower (2nd) and Form 2B (4th). So much of what I’ve taught my children is a revival of my own education as well. 🩷

This year the kids will be listening to their classic literature separately and following along with the book (Form 1 on left and Form 2 on right) and then together as a family we will do Contemporary/New novels mixed with Ambleside Free Reads as audio while in the car or in the evening.

✨Thank you @maxandmaybooks for gifting us these really sweet early chapter books! #gifted

Right now my middle child (7yo) is building her confidence and fluency as an emerging reader.

She is exercising her reading skills with a decode-able phonetic reading program but I like adding in leveled readers like these to bring in new vocabulary to challenge her.

They were made for dyslexic children in mind with bold words and b/d underlined at the beginning of words, but they would be great for any reader!

Thanks @maxandmaybooks 📕📗📘📙
