Hi there! 💕 I owe my love of reading to my mom who taught me to read when I was 3.🎒 As a little girl, I liked visiting the library and bringing a stack of new books home in my backpack.🍕I effortlessly earned medals and personal pan pizzas from the Book It program and Dairy Queen Dilly Bars from the library’s summer reading program.📚I loved reading the American Girl books and The Babysitter’s Club series. 👩🏽Recently, I have enjoyed reading books by Tia Williams, Britt Bennett, Shauna Robinson, Elise Bryant, and Charmaine Wilkerson and I often feature Black authors and diverse stories. 🛍️ Style and Savings started as a thrift fashion blog and turned into a bookstagram when I started shopping less, and reading more. Each post shares a book’s brief synopsis paired with a book-cover inspired fashion photo.🌍 I appreciate how reading books expands our worldview and I enjoy the community created through discussing books with other readersLet me know what you’re currently reading or what’s up next in your To-Read stack! by @styleandsavings

Thank you, @simonbooks for the gifted copy of I Hope You Elope by Ruhama WolleIt’s summer wedding season and this one is for the ladies who are always a bridesmaid and feel burned out by the costly commitment of being in a bridal party. This book addresses the wedding industrial complex and how spending and expectations have inflated over time. Pressure to perform for social media has led weddings (and the parties leading up to them) to become a production for public consumption. Two of my favorite rom-coms from back in the day are The Wedding Planner and 27 Dresses. The Wedding Planner stars Jennifer Lopez as Mary, a wedding planner prepared to handle any mishap who coordinates every detail to manage the bride’s big day with precision.27 Dresses.stars Katherine Heigel as Jane who is constantly booked and busy as a selfless and supportive bridesmaid.Jane is dedicated to helping her friends, but it’s also easy to see how she could experience exhaustion and burnout from constantly giving I Hope You Elope addresses the unpaid and emotional labor that puts the maid in bridesmaid. Some of the tips offered to bridesmaids are:It’s ok to ask for clarification on responsibilities and costs involved before agreeing to be in a bridal party.Set a budget and remember that a dollar amount does not represent how much you care for the bride.Communicate - speak up if something doesn’t fit your availability or budget and suggest an alternative.Brides - it is your big day, but remember to be considerate of the people you love.I Hope You Elope addresses the uncomfortable truth that behind the scenes of a fun celebration, weddings are work! Calling attention to the downsides of the bridesmaid role provides an opportunity for a bride to reimagine the expectations and to remember to show appreciation for the ladies who stood by her side.Discussion Question: What is your favorite movie about weddings? 🍿 by @styleandsavings

“The Fourth of July only freed the land, you see. Juneteenth freed the people.”Thank you, @amistadbooks for the gifted copy of A Committee of One: How Faith + Action = A PurposeFull Life by Opal LeeIn this memoir/motivational book, Dr. Opal Lee (known as The Grandmother of Juneteenth) shares words of wisdom. Through stories from her own life, her resilience and faith are clearly illustrated. She is a retired educator who has also been dedicated to activism and community service throughout her life.Dr. Opal Lee fondly remembered Juneteenth celebrations during her childhood in Texas and realized that Juneteenth was not widely known and celebrated throughout other parts of the United States. In 2016 at age 89, she had the idea to walk 2.5 miles each day in cities on a route from Texas to Washington D.C. to create awareness for the petition for Juneteenth to become a national holiday. 2.5 represents the number of years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed for it to be enforced in Texas. At age 94, her efforts and prayers were fulfilled on June 17th, 2021 when the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act bill was signed into law making Juneteenth a federal holiday.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to feel inspired. Dr. Lee reminds us that one determined person can gather a community to work together for change.Photo 2: Sleeveless blouse by Merona (thrifted from @thredup by @styleandsavings
