In Cottonopolis, Khaled Hafez transforms memory into moving image — weaving family history, empire, and resistance into a 5-minute AI-generated vision that feels both ancient and urgently alive.

Through the eyes of the grandson of Hafez Donia — a revolutionary voice of 1919 Egypt — the film traces the journey of Egyptian cotton from the sun-soaked fields of the Nile Delta to the cold industrial mills of Great Britain.
Threads of land, labor, and legacy cross oceans… and return as echoes of a past that still pulses beneath today’s world.

Presented at the Amazonia Biennial® during COP30, Cottonopolis reminds us that climate, culture, and colonization are intertwined stories — and that art has the power to resurrect what history tried to silence.

📽️ A work commissioned by the Imperial War Museums (UK) for the permanent collection of the Harris Museum, Preston.

Em Cottonopolis, Khaled Hafez transforma memória em imagem — entrelaçando história familiar, império e resistência em um filme de 5 minutos criado por IA, ao mesmo tempo ancestral e urgente.

Pelos olhos do neto de Hafez Donia — figura da resistência egípcia de 1919 — o filme percorre o caminho do algodão do Egito: dos campos banhados pelo Nilo aos frios teares industriais da Grã-Bretanha.
São fios de terra, trabalho e legado que atravessam oceanos… e retornam como ecos de um passado que ainda pulsa no presente.

Apresentado na Bienal Amazônia® durante a COP30, Cottonopolis lembra que clima, cultura e colonização são narrativas entrelaçadas — e que a arte é capaz de trazer à luz aquilo que a história tentou silenciar.
