📸 𝗛𝗲𝗻𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳𝗮𝗻𝘁: 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱

A pioneer in documenting graffiti on trains and New York’s emerging hip hop, Henry turned his gaze to Amsterdam in the early ’80s. 🚇

𝘚𝘵𝘺𝘭𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘳𝘴, 𝘚𝘶𝘣𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘈𝘳𝘵 and 𝘚𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘺𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘈𝘳𝘵 were, for many European writers, the first window into the New York scene.

The trains could disappear.
The paintings could be erased.
But the images were already traveling.

Shooting the NYC Graffiti Legacy ART IS NOT A CRIME: ART VS. TRANSIT (1977–1987)

Squeezing two wild experiences like these into 20 slides is tough as hell! @artisnotacrime1977_1987 @artvstransit

Back in 2018, I was in Madrid shooting Henry Chalfant’s exhibition, “ART IS NOT A CRIME, 1977 – 1987.” It was a huge tribute from @suso33 to a true blueprint icon of the culture, the man who dropped #subwayart and #stylewars and showed the whole world the holy grail of graffiti. I won’t ever forget the crowd walking into CEART with flashlights, @henrychalfant holding court from the top of the main hall, or Suso catching tags and painting train replicas alongside total legends like @bladekingofgraf and @kel1st

Fast forward to 2019, I hit NYC with the crew to catch “ART VS. TRANSIT – 1977 – 1987” at the Bronx Museum. Documenting the memory of those old-school whole-cars right there in the Boogie Down, surrounded by original heavyweights where it all started... shit was mind-blowing. Everyone was in the building: icons like @crazylegsbx , legendary photo-heads like @joeconzo , Martha Cooper, and #jamesprigoff , plus a grip of original writers like @comet_the_king_1971 , @partonetds , Lee Quiñones, skeme,@albert_diaz1 , Snake 1, @mare139 , @duli_007 , @sjk_171 and @mike_171

Tomorrow I’m grabbing my gear to ride with SUSO33 and the team for the next stop: @straatmuseum in Amsterdam for “ART IS NOT A CRIME. Henry Chalfant: Capturing graffiti culture, NYC, 1977–1987.” They’re opening Henry’s first major retrospective in Holland, bringing back that original vibe he built with the city in the ‘80s that sparked the whole European scene.

For real, SUSO33’s curation hits different because he gets the culture from the inside out. He knows how to bring that raw street language and Henry’s flavor into a museum without losing an ounce of realness. Covering these three spots back-to-back ain’t just another photo gig for me. It’s about witnessing graffiti history being told with pure respect, capturing these generational link-ups, and documenting a legacy that, forty years later, is still running the world.

¡Vaya movida s sintetizar en 20 slides dos experiencias como estas!

There was a time when trains carried names.
Names that travelled across the city.
Images that appeared, disappeared and reappeared somewhere else.

And there was an eye that chose to capture and freeze that movement.

“𝐻𝑒𝑛𝑟𝑦 𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑙𝑓𝑎𝑛𝑡’𝑠 𝑔𝑎𝑧𝑒”

Through his lens, graffiti stopped being something that simply passed before our eyes and became memory, document and history.

𝗛𝗲𝗻𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳𝗮𝗻𝘁 was the foremost pioneer in documenting graffiti and the emerging hip hop culture of New York.

This exhibition is a well-deserved tribute to his great philanthropic work.

THE LEGACY OF HENRY CHALFANT:

ES 🇪🇸 MADRID · 2018
US 🇺🇸 BRONX · 2019
NL 🇳🇱 AMSTERDAM · 2026

Three cities.
Three seasons.
One same story in motion.

ART IS NOT A CRIME is a touring exhibition, constantly on the move and site-specifically contextualized at every stop, in every great capital, changing seasons to revisit these images from each city and each context.

An immersive show that brings together life-size train photographs, archival material, documents, films, books and a selection of anthropological images —many of them previously unseen— that allow you to step into Henry’s gaze and get closer to the people, styles and stories that built this culture.

Because graffiti was not just a way of painting or writing a name.

It was a way of living, competing, learning, sharing and becoming visible. “Giving a voice to the voiceless”.
And this time the journey arrives at a place essential to understanding the expansion of graffiti and urban art in Europe.

🇳🇱 The Netherlands was one of the main gateways for this culture into the continent.

A bridge between New York and Europe.

An essential stop in the story of its international expansion — and, in the best of scenarios, the STRAAT Museum.

🚇 The trains keep moving.
📸 The lens remembers.
🌍 The culture travels.

Noc167 was from The South Bronx and regarded by many as one of the best of his generation. He was a student and teacher who influenced many of the greats after him including Dondi who was from East NY Brooklyn.

Dondi was catching the trains that rolled into Brooklyn from The Bronx saw many of the amazing works produced in that borough but he was also deeply influenced by writers like Don1 Mafia and @slavethefabulousfive two very influential Style Masters who helped shape modern letters and painting styles.
