From the classroom to the 69th Annual New York Emmy Awards! 🎥🎊

A film developed in a cross-disciplinary class, Acting and Filmmaking for Social Change (FIL 500), has received two New York Emmy Award nominations.

Students served as the primary cast and crew of “Spiral,” a short film exploring the mental health of college students. The film was nominated for Best Director and Societal Concerns.

Co-teachers and the film’s directors, Adria Dawn and David Tarleton, brought students into the filmmaking process. They’ll travel this week to the ceremony and gala, along with at least two students, now alumni.

“We want everyone to know that when we are there, win or not, we are proud of the work that each and every person did for this film,” Dawn and Tarleton say. “We’re grateful, and we’ll take each of them with us in spirit.”

One student. Thirty slots nationwide. Three weeks in the UK. ✈️🎥

Film major Clara Hasegawa ’29 traveled overseas this summer for an immersive academic program through the Fulbright UK Summer Institutes (@usukfulbright).

The defining challenge of her program at Lancaster University (@lancasteruni) was collaborative filmmaking—pitching, critiquing and producing a script as a team that would share a single grade.

The group’s film explored the anthropocene, using Lancaster’s city streets to evoke humanity’s disruption of the natural world. Hasegawa, the sound designer, built much of the soundscape from field recordings of traffic and crowds.

Weekend travel to Liverpool, the Lake District and London gave her a broader sense of British storytelling traditions, from the Beatles Museum to Beatrix Potter’s house to the West End stages. 🌍

🎬🏆 EMMY-NOMINATED NEWS FROM THE FILM PROGRAM! 🏆🎬

We are absolutely thrilled to share that Spiral — co-directed by our own faculty filmmakers Adria Dawn (@adria.dawn) and Department Chair David Tarleton (@davidtarleton) — has been nominated for TWO New York Regional Emmy Awards! 🌀✨

🏅 Societal Concerns🏅 Best Director

Spiral is a powerful social change film exploring the mental health challenges faced by college students — an urgent and deeply important issue on campuses everywhere. 💙

What makes this recognition so meaningful is that it belongs to our incredible Syracuse University students too, who brought this film to life. While the production had support from local Syracuse cast and crew, the core team of actors and filmmakers were the students from Acting and Filmmaking for Social Change — the talented group you see in these photos. 🎥🌟

This nomination is a true reflection of the collaborative spirit across the College of Visual and Performing Arts — including the Film and Media Arts, Drama, and Newhouse — working together with our wider Syracuse community.

Congratulations to Adria, David, and all of #TeamSpiral — this one belongs to all of you! 👏🎉

🎬🏆 Congratulations to faculty members Adria Dawn @adria.dawn and David Tarleton @davidtarleton on their short film Spiral — which just took home two Bronze Telly Awards: one for Best Drama and one for Best Social Impact! 🥉🥉
Spiral explores student mental health in college — a subject that matters deeply and demands to be told with care, craft, and courage. The film was created in true Syracuse spirit: a collaboration between students from the Department of Film and Media Arts, Drama, and Newhouse, alongside professional actors from the Syracuse community. That's the kind of cross-disciplinary, community-rooted filmmaking we celebrate here. 🎥🤝
The Telly Awards, founded in 1979, honor excellence in video and television across all screens — and this recognition is a testament to the vision of its co-directors and the dedication of its entire cast and crew.
From concept to collaboration to award-winning impact — we are so proud of everyone who brought Spiral to life. 🌀✨
Congratulations to Adria, David, and the whole team. 👏 @su_vpa

🎬✨ OFFICIAL SELECTION — RIVERSIDE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ✨🎬
Huge congratulations to our alum Kimberly Edelson (@kimmyedelson) on her film Rays receiving an official selection at the Riverside International Film Festival! @riversidefilmfestival 🧡
Running annually since 2002, RIFF has brought the best in contemporary international and independent film to the Inland Empire region of Southern California, championing diverse and challenging stories of the human spirit. Being selected by this festival — which draws entries from across the globe and screens alongside world premieres and features — is a remarkable achievement.
Rays is Kimberly's senior thesis film, funded through a Syracuse University SOURCE grant, which supports undergraduate research and original creative inquiry.
Kimberly shared:
"I am so honored to be recognized by the Riverside International Film Festival. Watching Rays now makes me so emotional because it reminds me of all the amazing memories I was lucky enough to have during film school. This film was the most challenging and rewarding part of my time there, and it taught me lessons that I have carried with me on every project since. I am so proud of what my cast and crew were able to create, and I look forward to what lies ahead in my journey in filmmaking."
Now based in Los Angeles, Kimberly works as a freelance filmmaker in the camera department — and has recently been involved with the prestigious ASC Master Class.
This is just the latest chapter for Kimberly, who was nominated for the George Spiro Dibie ASC Award in the Undergraduate Category, one of only six nominees nationwide, for her work as Director of Photography on the narrative short The Wren in the Wood @thewreninthewoodfilm . Her cinematography has also been awarded Best Cinematography at the Indian Independent Film Festival @indianiff , with work selected at the Kookai International Film Festival @kookaiiff and the Indie Shorts Mag Film Festival @indieshortsmag
We couldn't be more proud of everything Kimberly continues to accomplish. The SU Film family is rooting for you! 🎥
