May I suggest that you stroll over to Dufferin and Queen (located on the south west side of Dufferin) to check out two sets of billboards?

This public artwork by collaborators Bo Wang (China/Amsterdam) and Lu Pan (Hong Kong) reaches across time, space, and histories of image making. Juxtaposed on two double-sided billboards, archival photographs respectively depict a Canadian and a Chinese painter engaged in their craft. In a compelling intervention, Wang and Pan replace the paintings pictured within the images with works from the “opposing” artist’s milieu, generating a layered dialogue between past and present. Ultimately, the installation questions the narratives shaping our visual world, and opens new possibilities for connection and understanding.

To learn more about the curious images, visit contact photo.com and select “public art.”

May is almost over, and with it the 2025 edition of CONTACT Festival of Photography 😞 Just a few more days to see the festival exhibitions and Kiri Dalena's billboards.

#REPOST @contactphoto
Kiri Dalena @kiri.dalena
Erased Slogans

Billboards at College St and Lansdowne Ave. Another set of billboards are at Queen and Dufferin. Link to map and exhibition descriptions are in my bio.

On view now through May 31

In her ongoing series Erased Slogans and Birds of Prey, Filipina artist Kiri Dalena has re-worked archival images produced in the Philippines more or less a century apart. Both series convey Filipino histories of the struggles for self-definition, and against silencing. Erased Slogans documents civil resistance against government powers, and Birds of Prey works against the propagandistic colonial lens. The selection presented on billboards in Toronto demonstrates that the projects, begun in 2016 and 2024, respectively, remain globally relevant today, with those in power increasingly attempting to suppress dissenting voices, and cultures worldwide continuing to counter the harm of colonial images.

*If you've looked for Kiri's "Erased Slogans" at College & Lansdowne, we're facing a delay as Pattison tries to gain access to the billboards on the property of the now shuttered car wash. Stay tuned for updates

It seems appropriate today to announce that Kiri Dalena's works will be shown on billboards in May as part of CONTACT Photography Festival. Shown here is an image from her ongoing "Erased Slogans" series. She's also showing work from her newer "Birds of Prey" series. Video in stories if you want a preview.

Although unrelated to works from the two series that will be shown, Dalena is part of REBAK, a collective founded to organize against former president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte. Under the guise of a "war on drugs" Duterte extrajudicially killed approximately 30,000 people. Those murdered were the poor, activists, journalists, dissenters. If you were in Toronto last summer, you may have seen RESBAK's "Stop Genocide" banner at gallery TPW.

Yesterday, Duterte was arrested and flown to the Hague to face the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity. I've dropped some info in my stories for those that want to know more.

Kiri Dalena is a visual artist and filmmaker known for her works that lay bare the social inequalities and injustices that continue to exist, particularly in the Philippines. Her active involvement in the mass struggle to uphold human rights amidst state persecution is the foundation for her art practice, which underscores the relevance of protest and civil disobedience in contemporary society.

@nuitblancheto ✨ Waterfront West✨
October 5, 7pm-October 6, 7am 🌛☀️

We are 6 days away! Are you tired of me yet? After Nuit, I won't be art-ing for a bit. So come out and see the work of these artists! And come see Waterfront East and Central!!

Visit the Waterfront West Exhibition titled “The Weight of Levity”, located between Little Norway Park and HTO Park West (projects 1-8).

Set between soaring landmarks and watery depths, this exhibition curated by Su-Ying Lee (@su_ying.lee) examines the physical and emotional distance between up and down.

Underscored by the cycles of sunset and moonrise, The Weight of Levity considers the interrelatedness of seemingly distant positions through the metaphors of gravity and ascension, ups and downs. Over Nuit Blanche’s 12-hour duration, opposing physical, perceptual and emotional states are deeply explored as counterparts.

This exhibition is sponsored by @BBishopAirport
