Meet our 2026 21c Northwest Arkansas Award Finalist!

Su A Chae is a South Korea-born artist living and working in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She received an MFA in Painting from Indiana University Bloomington, and her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including The Painting Center, Ortega y Gasset Projects, and Wassaic Project, and featured in publications including New American Paintings, Whitehot Magazine, and Booooooom. Chae is currently Assistant Professor of Art (Painting) at the University of Arkansas.

As a painter working between Korean and American cultural contexts, Su A Chae explores identity and belonging through balance as an ongoing process rather than a fixed ideal. Through layered patterns, architectural motifs, and fragmented tiger forms inspired by Korean folk painting and broader cultural influences, she creates compositions that shift between stability and disruption. Her paintings reflect the experience of living between cultures, where belonging is continually recalibrated rather than resolved.

Su A Chae @sua_chae is a South Korea-born artist currently living and working in Arkansas in the United States. Her painting navigates questions of identity and belonging through balance, negotiating symmetry and visibility. Before transitioning to art in the United States, Chae worked in accounting academia in South Korea, where she developed an understanding of how accounting systems reduce information asymmetry and moral hazard in capital society. This background informs her examination of asymmetrical balance through paradoxical spatial propositions and form of ambivalence associated with cultural identity. Drawing from lived experience shaped by movement across cultural contexts and subtle references to minhwa, Korean folk painting, Chae employes visual languages that include the interplay of symmetry and asymmetry, patterns, arches, fragmentation, openings and closures, gradation, and molded textures. In her painting, belonging and balance function as ongoing process of resistance and recalibration—one that allows difference, contradiction, and tension to remain active rather than resolved.

Artist Su A Chae @sua_chae holds a BA and MA in Business from Ewha Womans University in South Korea. After relocating to the United States, Chae transitioned to the arts, earning her MFA in Painting from Indiana University. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Painting at the University of Arkansas. One of the ideas Chae encountered in accounting academia related to information asymmetry and moral hazards. Her interest in how systems manage asymmetry and visibility has carried over into her painting. For Chae, balance is a site of resistance rather than neutrality. Creating paradoxical spatial propositions and working with contextual ambiguity, Chae creates a visual field that is simultaneously familiar and unsettled.

“The work emerges from lived experience shaped by movement across cultural contexts, where belonging is continually recalibrated rather than assumed. Balance, in this sense, is not a static condition but an active process—maintained through adjustment, negotiation, and care. Drawing from subtle references to Korean cultural memory—including tiger patterns derived from minhwa, traditional Korean folk painting—I layer figural elements, patterns, and fragmented forms into dense visual compositions.”
