This was a book I had bought many years ago. It by a research scholar who took interviews of Anglo Indians still living in India. Many of them worked in the railways.
My father grew up in the railway colonies of Kharagpur and studied in the Railway Boys school. More than 80 years ago, Baba’s childhood was full of railways. My Boro Jethu (paternal uncle), an engine driver, had several Anglo-Indian colleagues. So did my Mama (maternal uncle) who was a guard on mail trains. In those days, the guard, who would be in isolation in the ‘guard's compartment’, would pass lonely nights, covering long distances through the deep, dark jungles of the South Eastern railways. Through the tiny bridges over moonlit rivulets and mighty rivers, through the famous jungles of Chakradharpur and Manoharpur, where the tree trunks looked like mighty elephants… The stories went on. By the time they came to me, mostly in bits and pieces, I was utterly mesmerised.
Now with seven brothers and one sister, Baba at one point knew almost every one of the railway fraternity.
So a book like this was wrapped with recollections and anecdotes. I took it home and Baba loved it. I knew this because he was quietly possessive about the book and was sad when it was lost. He had lent it to a friend and when the friend passed away, the relatives simply threw away what he had.
I did get a second copy later, but by then Baba couldn’t read any longer.

Without anthropomorphizing our nonhuman relations we can acknowledge that animals share many human characteristics. They have individual likes and dislikes, moods and mannerisms, and possess their own integrity, which suffers when not respected. They play and are curious about their world. They develop friendships and sometimes risk their own lives to help others. They have “animal faith,” a spontaneity and directness that can be most refreshing… all the traits indicative of soul. For soul is not something we can see or measure. We can observe only its outward manifestations: in tears and laughter, in courage and heroism, in generosity and forgiveness. Soul is what’s behind-the-scenes in the tough and tender moments when we are most intensely and grippingly alive.

Nights are always more interesting than the day. The strange sounds, the dark shadows and mind and eye playing imaginary tricks. The moment you turn one side the other tempts you to turn around. The cacophony of crickets and frogs rise and fall. Something plunges in the water.. some birds chirp sleepily…. Faraway a deer barks.. you imagine the almost silent cough of the leopard.. a shadow moves and one thinks of the silent gait of an elephant…suddenly rain falls on the trees and on the roofs.. adds to the overall soundscape. taken in Dhole's Den Bandipur by @subhabaroda

"I am interested in coherence and incoherence. The limitations of coherence, and the productive possibilities of incoherence. The irresistible pressure to find coherence and avoid the anxiety of incoherence. I am caught between needing a manageable progression of thought and argument, and a wish to allow the fragments to fall where they may. To demonstrate literally the panic inside our rational movement through the world."
