In 2018, a friend of mine and I were enjoying ourselves at Pacific Mall in Dehradun with a few friends of friends.

Suddenly, my friend saw the love of his life—dressed in a bridal outfit.

She hadn't invited him to her wedding. But after seeing him there, she later invited him.

Through a mutual friend, he gifted her a wedding gown. To this day, I have never heard whether she ever wore it or simply threw it away.

Neither of them attended her marriage, as they had decided to skip it.

One misunderstanding was enough to separate them forever. Everything they had shared shattered in a moment.

Ego took over. Unconsciously, they hurt each other. Self-pride destroyed what once seemed like an unbreakable relationship.

And the words that started the differences between them were:

“I never had the guts.”

Sometimes, it isn't the absence of love that destroys a relationship. Sometimes, it's one misunderstanding, one unfinished conversation, and two people too proud—or too afraid—to say what they truly feel.

It was a winter evening in February 2019 at Connaught Place, and I was with a group of friends. Among us was one whose former love had just married someone else.

When we saw her, he fell completely silent. The rest of our group followed suit, and our usual chatter went entirely numb. The food and drinks remained untouched and were wasted.

I boarded the last metro at 23:38 from Rajiv Chowk to Akshardham. All night, I couldn't stop thinking about it, feeling as though it had happened to me. It took me three days and nights to shake off the feeling of that cold night. My heart felt heavy, my body burned, and my feet stayed freezing. In the end, the chapter closed with my books.

Their relationship lasted about seven years. We never knew why they separated, or who was in the right or the wrong. He eventually left the city.
