What do you actually get inside the mentorship?

We cover the things universities and random YouTube tutorials don’t — from spotting sessions, tracklay workflow, and negotiation skills… to getting real-world feedback and support from people already working in the industry.

It’s not just skills, it’s a roadmap. By the end, you’ll know exactly how to deliver professional sound design and how to position yourself for paid film work. by @successinsounddesign

Meet your Mentor.

Jake Fielding is an Emmy-nominated Sound Editor & Re-Recording Mixer, with credits including True Detective and Get Millie Black (HBO), and MobLand (Paramount+). His portfolio spans over 30 short and feature films, as well as commercials for international brands such as Mercedes AMG F1, Expedia, The Army Reserves, KFC, and more.

With training from the National Film & TV School and years of experience building a career project by project, Jake understands the challenges of breaking into film sound — and what it takes to succeed.

That’s why he created Success in Sound Design, a program designed to help aspiring creatives launch their careers with real-world training, structured guidance, and proven results.

🚀 Doors are opening for the next cohort October 1st — will you be the next success story?

🎬 How much should you charge for a short film?

If you’ve ever stared at a blank email wondering what number to send a director, you’re not alone. Pricing your work as a sound designer can feel like guesswork — and that’s dangerous for your confidence and your bank account.

That’s why I created this FREE Short Film Rate Training — it gives you:
✅ A clear, realistic way to calculate your rate
✅ My '15-Minute Rule' for estimating project timelines
✅ A bonus invoice template & 5 negotiation tips

Stop undercharging, start negotiating like a pro - link in bio. 👊

Student Success Story
#sound #sounddesign #audio by @successinsounddesign

Nobody teaches you how to actually become a freelance sound designer.
You spend years learning Pro Tools, sound design, editing, mixing…
Then suddenly you’re expected to know:
❌ How to price yourself
❌ How much tax to put aside
❌ What expenses you can claim
❌ What insurance you need

This week inside Success in Sound, we had a group session breaking down the business side of freelancing:
✅ Setting yourself up correctly with HMRC
✅ Managing money and tax
✅ Creating professional invoices
✅ Protecting your equipment and your business

But the biggest value wasn't just the information. It was the discussion.
Members were able to ask questions about their own situations, share experiences, and learn from each other's challenges. That’s what makes the community so valuable.

Every call, Q&A and workshop becomes part of a growing library of resources that members can access anytime — meaning the knowledge inside the programme keeps building. You also get:

🎧 A community of aspiring and working sound designers
🎧 Direct access to guidance and feedback
🎧 A constantly growing library of practical training
🎧 The systems and knowledge to build a freelance career

$Every sound designer needs a great website, but one mistake can completely derail your credibility. That’s why it’s imperative you get it right. 🧵👇 Last night, the #SuccessinSoundDesign cohort sat down with expert web developer James Elmer to fix the exact mistakes keeping sound designers from getting hired. Here is a fraction of what we covered to make sure our members' sites actually land them gigs: - Copywriting: How to use the "Guide, Not the Hero" framework to focus on the client's problems. - Structure: The 5 mandatory pages you need, and the 4 questions your homepage must answer in 2 seconds. - Platforms: Wix vs. Squarespace vs. WordPress + Elementor. - Trust: Using headshots, client logos, and branding to look instantly professional to busy directors. - Tech: Why 47% of people ditch a site in 2 seconds, and the exact tools to fix it. We didn't just talk theory. We did live website reviews on the call; members got their exact setups dissected, and all current and future members get the opportunity to have their personal sites reviewed directly by James. Stop guessing if your website looks professional or amateur. Comment "WEBSITE" to join the community, unlock this 79-minute masterclass, and get your own site reviewed! 🚀 #sounddesign #webdesign #education #gethired by @successinsounddesign$

Delighted to be hosting the brilliantly talented Andrew McKee BFE (Waterloo Road, McDonald and Dodds) for a live masterclass on editing and post-production.

'Picture editing is the stage that shapes the film before most sound designers ever open the session. But how well do you actually understand what’s happening in the edit suite? And what advantage are you missing if you don’t?'

On Monday, 2nd March, we’re hosting a live masterclass with Andrew (15+ years editing across film & TV), alongside Jake, to unpack what this means for you as a sound designer.

We’ll cover:

- What an editor really does — from assembly to delivery
- How sound is used during the cut (temp tracks and SFX)
- The sounds editors constantly struggle with
- How strong editor–sound designer collaborations happen
- Practical advice on surviving as a freelancer in Film & TV
- How sound can support storytelling from the very first assembly

The first of many group and Q&A calls exclusively for community members. by @successinsounddesign

Success in Sound Design has moved to Skool! A clearer progression path, more community feel and a streamlined centralised system to better support current members. I’m also launching regular group calls, which serve as Q&As, accountability and weekly planning meetings, plus industry guest speakers and masterclasses.

The recent momentum in the group has been strong.

One member who joined in January has just completed sound design on her first short film that’s shortly heading to festivals. Another recently shadowed a re-recording mixer, and told me:

“I went to shadow a mixer at BBC studios, having a go at mixing the show on the desk, inputting ADR and sorting deliverables. I feel I was able to engage in technical conversation a lot more due to your support!”

This is the goal — helping sound designers build real skills and step into professional environments with confidence; I honestly love getting messages like this.

Spaces are almost full for the current cohort; I have ONE space available, so if you’re thinking about joining, now's the time. You can book a call at the link in my bio

I've said it before; confidence can't be taught. But teaching you how, and applying it to a real project, is the closest thing. Our latest student landed a short film gig the DAY AFTER our intro call.

Now on day one, she's:

👩‍🎓 Learning how to edit, mix and deliver a short film tracklay.
💻 Applying it to a real freelance project with a filmmaker, which I passed on.
✅ Not second-guessing herself.
👥 Building her own genuine network.

Great to see feedback like this. Confidence is the biggest challenge facing junior sound designers, see how the course can change that for you.

Stop guessing your worth.

Most new sound designers are undercharging. If you just guess your rates, you’re leaving money on the table. Your talent isn’t the problem. Your pricing is.

Because of this, you take jobs that drain you. You say yes because you’re scared to quote higher, and you don’t know what’s fair — so you wing it.

The good news? Pricing is a skill and can be taught like editing or mixing; though almost no one does teach it. This is your reminder of the free rate training that does.

Inside:
– A simple system to calculate your real rate
– A rate calculator
– An invoice template
– 5 negotiation tactics we actually use
If quoting makes you nervous, start here.

Download it and fix your rate. Link in bio!
