Over the moon and beyond grateful to receive this news: The Immortal Woman (House of Anansi @houseofanansi) has been shortlisted for the 2026 William Saroyan International Prize for Writing, awarded every two years by the Stanford University Libraries and William Saroyan Foundation. 🙏🙏

I've long admired the books by @karissaychen @brooklynstani @jaquiradiaz @faustcarson @justinhayneswriter @navidsinaki, so it's a little surreal to be in their (and others') company. I'll have to pretend to behave normally today 😂😊

In this NBN episode, I speak with Su Chang, author of The Immortal Woman (House of Anansi, 2025).

Head to my bio link to go to my NBN host page to listen in.

A sweeping generational story of heartbreak, resilience, and yearning, revealing an insider’s view of the fractured lives of Chinese immigrants and those they leave behind.

Lemei, once a student Red Guard leader in 1960s Shanghai and a journalist at a state newspaper, was involved in a brutal act of violence during the Tiananmen Square protests and lost all hope for her country. Her daughter, Lin, is a student at an American university on a mission to become a true Westerner. She tirelessly erases her birth identity, abandons her Chinese suitor, and pursues a white lover, all the while haunted by the scars of her upbringing. Following China’s meteoric rise, Lemei is slowly dragged into a nationalistic perspective that stuns Lin. Their final confrontation results in tragic consequences, but ultimately, offers hope for a better future. By turns wry and lyrical, The Immortal Woman reminds us to hold tight to our humanity at any cost.

SU CHANG is a Chinese Canadian writer. Born and raised in Shanghai, she is the daughter of a former (reluctant) Red Guard leader. Her fiction has been recognized in Prairie Fire’s Short Fiction Contest, the Canadian Authors Association (Toronto) National Writing Contest, the ILS/Fence Fiction Contest, and the Masters Review’s Novel Excerpt Contest, among others.

I couldn’t possibly have asked for a better "first" literary festival. It was a true privilege to share the stage with icons like @dr.joanne.liu, @kim.echlin, @ashzgl. The audience was so incredibly kind and attentive that I briefly forgot to be nervous.

A huge thank-you to @kaliannpearson and her team of indefatigable volunteers for creating this magical experience for writers and readers🙏🙏🙏

TMR PRESENTS | EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW FEATURE 🎉
THE RANDY BOYAGODA INTERVIEW
@themiramichireader

📘 Lords of Serendipity by Randy Boyagoda is published by HarperCollins @harpercollinsca and @marinerbooks

Both sharply satirical and deeply humane, Lords of Serendipity examines what education promises, what it actually delivers, and what people are willing to risk in pursuit of opportunity. In this conversation, Boyagoda reflects on the campus novel as both literary form and institutional X-ray, discussing satire, civil discourse, compromised moral choices, and the fragile ideals that still draw people to universities.

He also considers his own position as novelist, professor, and administrator, and why fiction can hold competing truths about higher education without resolving them too neatly.

Our August Short Story Month begins with a remarkable voice whose work we have admired since the publication of Su Chang’s outstanding debut novel 'The Immortal Woman'. We’re delighted to publish her powerful short story 'The Bottle Man'. Set in Toronto, this moving tale explores migration, memory, dignity, family, and the quiet loneliness of lives lived between languages and cultures. It is a deeply humane portrait of an immigrant whose bottles, bicycles, and songs conceal a lifetime of hope, disappointment, and resilience. A fitting opening to a month in which Literatur.Review brings together previously untranslated and unpublished short fiction from the Global North and South.
(Available in Arabic, English, French, German & Spanish)

Over many months, the wonderful Sheelagh Caygill @on_creative_writing and I had hours of conversations and multiple recording sessions before this episode was sent into the world. I couldn't have asked for a better interlocutor than Sheelagh, who is intelligent, thorough, and kind. We covered A LOT of ground in our initial recordings. In this distilled final version, we discussed freedom of reading and writing, freedom of writing in a second language, and the tension between remembering and forgetting the past. Hope you will have a listen!
