The Flying Rhino's of Kaziranga - I was on a project at Kaziranga shooting for the Sony A9 II and was desperate to capture some action to showcase the AF tracking of the camera.

It was the last safari and had to move to Meghalaya after this. While we were exiting the park, I saw this Rhino chasing happening and asked the driver to position the vehicle so that I can get good eye level shots. The tracking of the Sony A9 II was spot on and never missed a shot.

The best part of this was - When I went back to the resort, I packed my stuff to leave for Meghalaya. Not sure what struck me, unpacked my laptop and took a backup of these images I had copied on to my hard disk.

Later at Meghalaya, I formatted my card to capture the images from there. The next day my laptop crashes and was really lucky to have had taken the backup.

Remember - always take regular backups in the field. You never know what happens when !!!

It's a beautiful fight.

Tips to get these kind of action shots:
If you notice two male Peacocks with each other and going round and round, you better stop and have your camera settings ready, as they will fight at some point of time.

To freeze the action make sure you have a high shutter speed and also important to get the af point correct. In case of Sony I use the tracking with subject detection and it works fantastic.

When they fight, they will go up in air, so be careful with your composition and keep space on top, or be fast to move the camera with their action.

This is where the 120 fps of Sony A9 III comes handy. In these series, I shot at 120fps and selected those images where the wing spread is good showing the backlight.

Birds don’t wait for you to get ready.

A kingfisher dives in a quarter of a second. A hornbill takes off before you’ve raised the camera. A raptor catches a thermal and disappears. You blink once and the shot is gone.

You spend hours barely moving. Just watching. Then it all happens in a single frame.

That’s the joy of it. Not just the images. The sharpness you build. Reading behaviour before it happens. Locking focus on something moving faster than thought. Being in the right spot at the exact moment a wing unfurls or an eye catches the light. Having the patience to wait for all of it.
Every classic bird image is earned the hard way.

This set is some of my best across different locations and species. No single theme, no single trip. Just birds that stopped me in my tracks. by @sudhirshivaram

Manas Tiger Reserve holds some of India's most rarely photographed wildlife. The capped langur is one of them. Made these images long time ago.

The canopy creates brutal contrast. Bright patches against deep shadow. Your camera cannot hold both ends at once.

Expose to protect your highlights. If the sky or bright patches are clipping, pull exposure down until they hold detail. Your shadows will go dark. That's fine. A dark shadow is recoverable. A blown highlight is not.

In post, lift the Shadows slider. Nudge Blacks up slightly. What looked like crushed fur or lost branch detail will start coming back. Don't over-lift though. Langurs have a beautiful tonal range between that dark cap and the pale coat. You're not trying to make everything equally bright. You're trying to make everything readable.

If the contrast is too harsh, bracket your shots and blend in post. Or come back at blue hour. Forest light goes soft and the problem solves itself.

People think wildlife photography is about capturing the majestic animal, the perfect pose, the dramatic moment.

But it isn't. Not really.

It's about being present enough to notice the subtle changes in the light, the way it filters through the trees, the way it dances across the water. Patient enough to stay when nothing is happening, when the animals are hiding, when the weather is uncooperative.

Ready enough that when it finally does, your hands already know what to do, your camera settings are already dialed in, your composition is already framed. 📸

It's about understanding the behavior, the patterns, the habitats. It's about respecting the space, the environment, the creatures. The forest teaches you that, slowly, quietly, over time. It just takes years of dedication, persistence, and passion.

That's also what I try to pass on in everything I teach, not just the technical skills, but the mindset, the patience, the respect. For the love of wildlife, for the love of nature, for the love of the journey. ❤️ by @sudhirshivaram

The Mara doesn’t just give you wildlife. It gives you art. 🌅

Every frame in this set is from the same destination. The Maasai Mara. Yet no two images look alike. Fiery golden sunsets. Electric yellow dawns. Intimate blue hour. Stark, timeless black and white. Lions with hot air balloons drifting in the morning mist. Cheetahs watching the plains from termite mounds. Zebras dissolving into dust and light.

This is what makes the Mara unlike anywhere else for a photographer. The light changes by the minute and wildlife is around every corner. The open landscape lets you see and compose from a kilometre out, frame after frame.

It hands you the ingredients. Your job is knowing what to do with them.

The tip from this set:
The same scene, shot at different times of day or in different light, becomes a completely different photograph. Don’t just arrive for one golden hour and leave. Stay for the blue dawn. Come back at midday for the harshness. Shoot colour and then switch to black and white. The Mara rewards the photographer who stays out and keeps looking. Not the one who shows up and leaves.

The variety is all there. You just have to stay long enough to see it. 📷🌍
