It couldn't be more timely to write a paean to the healing power of soup @telegraphfood & how it connects us with our Mums and our heritage. Every time I make our Jewish chicken soup I think of my late Mum answering the door, still in her apron, enveloping me with a hug, and saying 'the soup is hot, are you ready?'. Utterly thrilled with the family tree of Ungars & Zolas created by Dad’s gorgeous cousin @angiehillview & most fittingly given to us last night when we met for pierogi & jazz @posklondon as this side of our family are originally from #Rseszow, Poland. I clearly remember my great-grandmother Taube Friedentag born 1884 & her legendary kneidlech. She & my great grandfather Adolf Ungar came to live at 21 Monmouth St where he became a show business barber, no wonder my Grandma loved the theatre so much. Both she & Angie’s Dad Cecil had the most wonderful ringlets which must explain where my curls come from. Happy to see @kafayat_olaleye had already been added to the tree in readiness for their wedding this August! I love how @pierreminotti @orreryrestaurant is playing with expectations of haute French dining whilst delivering food of exquisite finesse. First there’s sublime cold bouillaibasse, then pissaladière with a panisse base, anchovies of course 👏& girolles & Limousin veal sweetbread & sheep’s cheese (what would the Nissarts think?) Then, this charmingly eccentric pause at the bar for Trou Normande recalibrated into something very precise & special before lacquered quail with an ambrosial pea broth & a dessert that takes liberties with cheesecake turning it ethereal with peaches. Surely scrambled eggs & anchovies is the best breakfast/brunch ever? I think @jeremyleeqv agrees. Wow, what a lively evening @theorangepublichouse hosted by @ben.tish the inaugural #battleofthedough with brilliant compering by @lucapassionevino & judges who were def suffering pizza fatigue by the end @joshbythesea Hannah Evans Niki Blasina @wildfarmed And did they ‘Consider the Anchovy’? How could any pizza with anchovies from #Cetara not win?@sud_italia was the bloody worthy winner, I couldn’t eat enough of their deeply flavourful pizza with just the right anchovy oomph 🙌. I also liked @worldfamousgordos creative pizza with Gorgonzola piccante, caramelised peaches, guanciale, basil & parmesan in 2nd place. @jsheekeyldn is 135 years old and as gorgeous as ever with the loveliest of staff and the sun dancing on the terrace. I tried two of their classic dishes: exemplary potted shrimp and the Cornish fish stew. @stephen_cottage couldn’t resist the haddock & chips! Exquisite strawberries in elderflower jelly with pannacotta and warm madeleines was the quintessential summer dessert.
