360-degree real-world test completed!
Two radar sensors offset by 180 degrees and shielded with metal plates produce virtually no interference. There is a small blind spot, which I may be able to eliminate through interpolation if necessary.

The ESP32’s transmission power is simply outstanding—virtually lossless. The motion detection and proximity alarm work flawlessly.

What began a few months ago as a weekend project has evolved in ways I never imagined within just a few months.

It started with a simple ESP32-based radar system.

Then came the transition to Linux.
Next, a LiDAR sensor and a thermal camera were added to the radar module. This integration sparked the idea of converting 2D data into 3D to create a complete surveillance system. First try with a robot was to tricky so I changed the rotating basis to a 360 servomotor with constant feedback. by @sudo_solder

Those lazy days in the lab with a lab.

How lazy can you get? Me: Yeah!

A simple radar sensor connected via Wi-Fi to a display that detects movement through doors and provides an early warning.

RADAR UPDATE 📡
Three new features on the tracker build:
🔋 BATTERY INDICATOR
Live voltage readout on the transmitter and receiver. No more guessing when the LiPo’s about to tap out mid-build session.
🔇 MUTE BUTTON
Touchscreen toggle on the Giga display — tap to silence the tracker sound instantly. Because sometimes you just want the visual without the beeping.
🔊 SOUND MODULE
Proximity-reactive audio — pings speed up and climb in pitch as a target gets closer (like in the alien movie). Distance-mapped, non-blocking, runs straight off a passive piezo buzzer.

Still just an RD-03D 24GHz mmWave sensor + Arduino Giga R1 + a lot of trial and error. by @sudo_solder

humans, 1 radar, 0 wires 📡

24GHz mmWave radar (RD-03D) tracking 3 moving targets in real time — distance, position, speed.

Wireless sensor node: XIAO ESP32-S3 reads the radar, streams target data over UDP to an Arduino Giga R1, which renders it live.

FMCW radar only sees movement — no Doppler shift, no detection.

Does this sound familiar: You have a security camera but don’t know where your footage ends up? Your privacy and data could end up anywhere.

Here’s my mobile surveillance system that protects your privacy. No cameras—just sensors that detect movement and temperature differences.

The sensor unit sends the processed data to your display via its own Wi-Fi network. No internet connection required. You can see what’s happening remotely from a safe distance.

I’m struggling actually with the thermal sensor stream to my receiver unit. by @sudo_solder

Radar update!

Built a live sensor-fusion display: 360° LiDAR (FHL-LD19) + 24GHz mmWave radar (RD-03D) on an ESP32-S3, streamed over WiFi to a Clockwork Pi uConsole running Python/Pygame.

The debugging path was a rabbit hole: mirrored point clouds, a 90° rotation offset, CRC errors from a Serial-print bottleneck starving the UART buffer, radar frames silently dropping under WiFi congestion. Fixed it all with a compact binary protocol instead of JSON, a non-blocking radar config sequence, and properly sized UART buffers.

Now it runs clean — zoomable live radar/LiDAR overlay, real-time target tracking, distance rings, the works.

Sometimes the “one small bug” is really five bugs in a trenchcoat.

It’s finished!

360° LiDAR + 24GHz radar fused into one live display — ESP32-S3 hosts its own WiFi, streams both sensors as compact binary packets to a Clockwork Pi uConsole running Python.

The chaos behind the scenes: mirrored point clouds, a 90° rotation bug, a Serial-print flood silently killing my sensor data, radar packets vanishing at random — turned out to be WiFi congestion from 200+ UDP packets/sec. Fixed it, then built a synthesized sonar sound that gets faster and higher-pitched the closer something gets. No audio files — it’s pure math, generated in Python.

This is basically a real-life Aliens motion tracker, minus the xenomorphs (hopefully).

I’m currently building a DIY 3D LiDAR and radar scanner.

Big thanks to @northworkslab and @openelab_io for the support and inspiration. You guys rock!!

The setup uses an STL-27L LiDAR mounted vertically together with an RD-03D 24 GHz radar. Both rotate on a DYNAMIXEL XL430, so I can combine the sensor data with the exact rotation angle.

One of the biggest challenges is timing. Every LiDAR point and radar detection needs to match the position of the scanner at that exact moment. Otherwise the whole map starts to shift or distort.

An ESP32-S3 handles the sensors and rotation control, while the software combines the data into a live 3D view.

LiDAR gives me the structure of the room, radar adds information about moving targets, and the servo tells me where the sensors were pointing when the measurement happened.

Still a lot to improve, but that’s the interesting part. Most of this project is testing, finding problems, changing things and testing again.

The end goal is a compact system that combines LiDAR, radar and position data into one synchronized view of its surroundings. by @sudo_solder

Do you like the stuff I build?
Check my profile I have some more!

Being alone in a forest is scary.
But not if you have this surveillance system with you.
You can track any movement around you. They can’t hide and you see them first.

All performed with an esp32, some sensors and a uconsole for remote surveillance. by @sudo_solder

It’s so cool when the dog is just as into tech as his dad.

Treats all over the floor, my dog is running back and forth, and I get to show how well the 3D tracker works.

No magic—just the combination of several sensors. by @sudo_solder
