Featured Artist: Sue Wearne

Sue Wearne is a contemporary landscape painter based in Gippsland, Victoria. Her paintings draw inspiration from the geometry and rhythms of cultivated landscapes, where patchwork fields, hedgerows and rolling hills are distilled into quiet arrangements of colour, shape and light. Working primarily in acrylic on board, she creates layered compositions that balance structure with atmosphere.

Wearne holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from RMIT University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching from the University of Melbourne. Alongside her studio practice, she is Head of Arts at a secondary school in Gippsland. Selected exhibitions include her solo exhibition GENESIS (2021), Shoreline (2022), Painting Pattern (2023), Untitled (2023) and Into the Hills (2026). Her work is held in private collections throughout Australia and internationally and is stocked by the Latrobe
Regional Gallery.

Featured work:
1. Evening Country
2. I Dream of Green Topaz
3. Soft Evening Fields
4. Open Country
5. When the Hills Call
6. Where the Fields Turn Home

The last one left!!
Where the Land Opens is the final painting still available from my Studio Sale.

Inspired by my trip to Ireland, this one takes me straight back to the west coast and Connemara. Those quiet stretches of water, rolling green hills and soft grey skies. It’s a landscape that has really stayed with me, and one I seem to keep coming back to in my work.

I also want to say a huge thank you to everyone who purchased a painting from the sale. It means so much to know that these works are heading off to new homes, and the support for my work is something I never take for granted.

It’s also created some much-needed space in the studio for what comes next. I’m finishing off a huge commission at the moment, and then I’ll be starting a new body of work that I’m really excited about. I’ve got lots of ideas tinkering away in my mind and I’m looking forward to finally getting into them.

Over 30 works from recent and past collections will be on sale from 8pm AEST this Thursday.

There are some pretty crazy sale prices, I must say! I desperately need to make some room in the studio and, to be honest, I discovered yesterday that I’d been quietly hoarding works I didn’t even realise I still had.

There’ll be small works, large works, framed pieces, paintings on wood blocks and a few surprises.

Have a browse from 8pm Thursday at www.suewearne.net is you so wish.

I’ve decided it’s time for a Studio Sale.

My little studio has become wonderfully full over the past few years and, with new ideas waiting to come to life, I need to make some space.

There’ll be a mix of works available, including small and large paintings, framed works, paintings on timber blocks, assemblage pieces and a few unexpected gems… even a little pink oil painting of Wilsons Prom.

Many of these works will be available at significant discounts. While I’ve held studio sales in the past, I think this will be my only one for the year. It’s simply an opportunity to clear some space in the studio before I begin a new body of work.

I’d love these pieces to find new homes, and I always feel incredibly grateful knowing one of my paintings has become part of someone else’s everyday life.

The Studio Sale opens Thursday at 8pm AEST and will be available exclusively through my website:

www.suewearne.net

Thank you so much for your continued support. It allows me to keep painting, and I’m incredibly thankful for that. 🤍

So my procrastination efforts are in full swing today. Mind you, I had a big day at work and opted for some studio time when I got home to shift my mindset. I worked a little more on my commission but ran out of paint. Rather than calling it a night, I decided to trial some new prints instead.

Turns out it wasn’t procrastination at all, just a reminder that sometimes the creative detours are exactly what you need. I can’t tell you how much calmer I feel.

Those familiar May feelings… when teaching starts to feel a bit relentless and you realise you need to go looking for a little balance again.
So I disappeared into the bush for a wander and came home with bits of shrubbery stuffed under my arm for some gelli printing experiments.
To be honest, the commission I’m working on hasn’t really been flowing lately and I could feel myself getting a bit creatively stuck, so I knew I needed an outlet without pressure attached to it. Mixed success print-wise, but I feel calmer, more rested, and a little more like myself again… so I’m calling that a win.

Finally reading through the little visitor book from our exhibition, Into the Hills at the wonderful @meeniyanartgallery. I got a bit teary there for a second. I still can’t quite believe how many people ventured down to see the show, and how special it was reconnecting with people I haven’t seen in far too long.

What an absolute privilege it is to read your messages. Thank you for supporting what we do, because we genuinely love it and live for it.

Seriously though, thank you. Truly. 🤍 taken in MAG Meeniyan Art Gallery by @sue_wearne

It’s been such a privilege to exhibit Into the Hills at one of our favourite galleries, @meeniyanartgallery, this month.

We’re honestly so grateful to everyone who has made the trip to see it. It really does mean a lot. Your kind words and feedback have been incredibly encouraging.

We’re also very aware we’re just one small part of a pretty special lineup this month, sharing the gallery with Fault Lines by Hilary Skelton and Sue Gilford, and Fragile Futures by Dina Goebel. It’s such a treat to experience all three shows together.

I know it’s a bit of a hike for many, so thank you for making the effort. Although, let’s be honest, the Meeniyan food scene does some of the heavy lifting. We’ll happily take partial credit for getting you there.

The show runs until April 26.
