Excited to be in this show in good ole NYC! Opening THIS Wednesday, October 7 from 6-8 at Lichtundfire:

ANTHROPOCENE

Concept and Curation by Priska Juschka, ANTHROPOCENE is an exhibition in various media, from Abstraction to Abstracted, Conceptual Representation, that brings together artists who shine a light on the impactful existence of humanity on our planet.

Anthropocene is a term often used to describe a new geological epoch in which humanity becomes a planetary force of change. It appears in scientific and social discourse, especially when referring to the accelerating geophysical and biochemical changes that characterize the 20th and 21st Centuries. The word stems from ancient Greek anthropos = human and kainós (cene) = new, characterizing an era when human activity rivals major natural forces.

Light Circles support this theme. While we cannot capture the light, the invention of electric light has allowed massive human population centers to be seen from low earth orbit, demonstrating how humanity’s impacts are visible at a global scale. The shift into an anthropocene epoch names the ongoing mega shifts in our world, as humans create their own heat and light, changing that world, perhaps destroying it. Each small circle, with light escaping, is a tiny echo, a reminder of what we cannot control, what escapes and what cannot last.

Opening Wednesday, October 7 with the opening reception that night from 6-8pm, the exhibition runs through October 24. Gallery hours are Wed - Sat, 12- 6pm and by appointment.

So I’m in a parking lot in Joshua Tree at 104 degrees the other day, and my EV demands immediate attention from the dealer, “Refill inverter coolant!! Right now!” After googling (yes, terrible emergency), calling the nearest dealer (an hour away thru the desert to Palm Springs), we limped home and made an appointment for the next morning. It took from 8:15 am until 5:30 pm, but here’s the GOOD NEWS: I spent much of the day at the wonderful Palm Springs Art Museum! There was even a wall of CA artists’ portraits! Way more fun than the Met or LACMA!

(OK, I know they’re not all CA artists, but wasn’t that a cool painting of Hockney in his studio?)

Glass pieces, Naomi Shioya
Vaginal Davis, Unsung Super Heroines
Pre-1920 baskets (one with a rattlesnake) by Patencio and Arenas
Chihuly glass in the garden
Viola Frey
Gerald Clark (like a basket, only 6’)
Duane Hanson (fooled me the first time walking past)
Nayarit figure, c. 209 BCE
And, it wouldn’t have been complete without this little Diego Rivera study by @suechor

I’m back at one of my favorite art places in the world, Joshua Tree Highlands Art Residency. And so happy to have access to a wide open blue sky, the desert landscape, and a huge studio space, after all this time working on a desktop. Plus baby birds! What more can you ask?

Perfect song. Moon Circles 3, with a small studio story. I had this pricey frame for something else, didn’t use it, cost too much to return, so it sat around the studio for months. Finally bought the canvas and voila! But pretty accidental, this formal little piece. Very framed.

Moon Rings 12
Fascination with gold continues, especially when juxtaposed with black, the darkness in our world today, with a focus on the light.

Moon Circle 8

Black moon, eclipsing the sun, story of what’s going on in our country, the world these days. I ran out of paper, so made this on the reverse of the lovely violet moon, somehow hoping that the beauty will win.
