She’s home!
We picked Kinsey up from @fitzpatrick_referrals late yesterday afternoon, where she’d been since her operation on Sunday. She was already walking, albeit a little unsteadily, but was VERY pleased to see us.
We’re having to use a sling to support her and she’s only allowed in the garden every now and then for a short comfort break, and tires easily. She’s still having to be kept very quiet so is in a small pen (which she hates) but it does mean she’s resting, which is what she needs. She’s on four lots of meds, and we’ll start her on some exercises today, following the instructions provided.
She has a long way to go but the surgery was deemed a great success, so it’s just time and care that matter now.
We really thought we were going to lose her. Hard to believe she’s been snuggling on my bed this morning (supervised and on a lead to stop her trying to jump off).
We can’t praise @fitzpatrick_referrals too highly. They’ve been absolutely wonderful, and especially Marc, the vet who looked after Kinsey. He was so kind and gentle with her, and explained everything to us so clearly, we left her with him absolutely sure she was in the best hands. by @suerob50

Update to original post:

Kinsey has a slipped disc. She was seen by an Emergency vet early yesterday, then by our own vet, who referred her to Fitzpatrick’s (of Supervet fame) in Surrey. She was examined by Mark (Marc?), who was so good with her. Of course, despite the pain and complete collapse of her back legs her tail was still wagging. She had an MRI earlier today, which showed the extent of the injury (and the fact that she was deteriorating quickly), and is currently undergoing surgery to put things right. We’ve been told there’s a 95% success rate on this particular procedure, so are keeping our fingers crossed.
We’re exhausted, hated leaving her but know it’s the only answer. Hopefully by Wednesday or Thursday she should be home with us. Meanwhile, we have to work out how to stop her jumping in the future. She is allowed on blanket-covered easy chairs, covered beds, jumps up and down onto our raised lawn when she’s following a scent, so we have to put our thinking caps on, persuade her to use the steps we bought for access to furniture and maybe put up a small fence to convince her to go the long way round on the path in the garden.
Have to say, I had a good cry earlier before the MRI. Was so afraid she wouldn’t be coming home again.

We’re in for a rough few day. Polly realised during the night that there was something seriously wrong, as Kinsey was hardly able to walk and obviously in great pain. She seemed absolutely fine at bedtime last night. We’ve taken her to the emergency vet who thinks she may have trouble with her spine. She’s had painkillers and is resting now, though obviously still in great pain. We have another appointment with our own vet in an hour, with a view to having an MRI scan. The knowledge she’s in pain is devastating. It’s awful, feeling this helpless.

A disappointing attempt at the partial lunar eclipse this morning. It was clear/cloudy, and very windy up near Beachy Head, with no way to shelter as the wind was coming straight from the West. I was later setting up than I’d wanted to be (Kinsey decided she needed a prolonged border patrol in the garden at 04.30) but it was a glorious morning, nonetheless. The strong wind was warm, the birds awakened (Raven kraaking overhead) and with the sky lightening behind me I was pleased I’d set my alarm to get out into the early morning.

Like many others, I’m relieved the 30°+ temperatures are over (for the time being, at least). Now I can put Kinsey’s blanket outside and let her soak up the warmth of the sun. It hasn’t been much fun for any of us, when it’s been too hot to stay outside, and difficult to keep the inside cool.
There’s a definite Autumnal feel to late evenings and early mornings. The days are shorter, the flood of Gatekeeper and Painted Lady butterflies was over a while back. The inch of rain we had earlier in the week has already revived the garden to a degree, and this coming last week of August is likely to bring more rain and continuing nearer average temperatures.
I’m not sure how I feel about Summer being almost over. I love the long days, being able to go out without a coat, the freedom it brings, but this Summer has been restricting and I feel a lot has passed me by, while I’ve stayed indoors out of the heat and tried to keep the house cool for us all. What will Autumn bring? Will there be any rich colours on the trees or will the drought affect the display? Fallen leaves, wind, rain?
I wonder if Winter will have its own extremes of weather, flooding, snow and cold for those who live in the North.
I guess, for now, it’s best to just enjoy a quiet late Summer day and be happy Kinsey can snooze in the sun. Cocker Spaniel lying on a blanket in the sun. by @suerob50

The state of my Cocker Spaniel after she decided to lie out in the sun and I hadn’t realised. The first time I’ve seen her drooling saliva through being overheated.
She had a cold drink (not too much in one go), a carrot from the freezer and was brought into the coolest room to recover in front of a fan, and she has a coolmat.
She no longer has free roaming into the garden whilst this heatwave is going on. Out, quick wee, back in. I don’t want her suffering like that again. I’ve been so careful about not taking her out on walks once the heat sets in. Sometimes we have to think for them. 🙄

Back home in the 27° heat of East Sussex, it’s already hard to remember the 11° of Northern Scotland. We did have some sun, but not enough. I didn’t expect to actually wear the thermal base layer I’d taken with me.
This fast-fading of holiday memories is something we all experience when back in our everyday routines, and it’s one reason I take photographs. The memories last far longer with images to remind me. With the advent of decent quality phone cameras it means a moment can be captured so easily, at times when the “big” camera isn’t to hand, or settings need adjusting and the moment has passed.
This was taken with an iPhone. Of course, it’s not perfect, but it’s still very impressive. And goodness, doesn’t it capture the magnificent cloud formation, the calm sea and the enormity of the sea and sky?
When I was uploading it to Instagram I was offered lots of different filters to “enhance” the image. Nope, not for me. I don’t use such things and for me, this photo is fine, just as it is.
How many places are there where one can stand at the end of the garden and have a scene like this develop in front of one’s eyes?
