My favourite butterfly, the Painted Lady, rests on meadowsweet amongst the great willowherb - the painting is titled “Sweet Summer”, and will be hanging in the City Assembly House for the Water Colour Society of Ireland’s annual exhibition, which opens tomorrow. I’m heading for Dublin in the morning, and look forward to seeing all the wonderful art and meeting people. by @suevancoppenhagen

New, bigger tote bags have been added to my range, featuring my favourite Painted Lady butterfly 🧡. They’re cotton canvas, measuring 38 x 46 cm, with a nice deep gusset of 12 cm, and are available from my website. I’m so pleased at how well they’ve printed 🦋 by @suevancoppenhagen

It probably sounds perverse to be sad at selling a painting; the “Woodspurge and Periwinkles” was a special one, though, that lived in my heart for a long time. I remember sitting in a ditch at the back of my garden in a cold February sketching the plants, and was happy with the final painting, which went on to win a medal and also hung in Westminster Hall with the SBA. I have finally let it go, though, to someone who will value it, and hang it alongside my “Fireweed: Phoenix of Flowers”. I love Rosebay Willowherb as a plant; here it is emerging from the bracken in the woods like a Phoenix arising from the flames. The plant is known for its tenacious ability to generate from waste ground, including that ravaged by fire and even bomb sites. I’m rather glad that each of these paintings will have a familiar companion to hang with it, although that might sound hopelessly sentimental! by @suevancoppenhagen

Despite a dismal, cool June so far, there are suddenly clouds of Painted Lady butterflies swirling in the air. I must have seen a dozen over coastal grassland on a walk a couple of days ago. Astonishing to think they migrate to Ireland and the UK from North Africa, and can travel 150 km in a day! by @suevancoppenhagen

And off she flies !
I was delighted to hear that my Emperor Moth painting will be making her way onto a new wall when the exhibition at Fota House finishes on 22nd (don’t miss your chance to see the exhibition before then !)

These are really large moths, sometimes mistaken for a butterfly, and tend to live on heathland, along field margins, over bogs and dunes. My semi-abstract background was painted to suggest vaguely any of these habitats.

I discovered that the males fly mostly by day, and the females by night - how do they find each other ?! As adults, they are on the wing in April and May, and don’t feed at all during this time -imagine ! They avoid becoming food themselves by flashing those ‘eyes’ on the wings to scare off predators.
