Professor Emerita Karen Blum, JD ’74, has made a $2 million gift to Suffolk—the largest faculty or staff donation in the University’s history—to establish the Karen Frankel Blum Distinguished Visitorship in Civil Rights Law.

Blum has spent more than five decades immersed in the areas that first drew her to the law: civil rights and the Constitution. As a Suffolk Law student, faculty member, and nationally recognized scholar, she has never strayed from those concerns.

Professor Blum’s gift will elevate the profile of civil rights studies at Suffolk by enriching the Law School curriculum and bringing prominent practitioners and scholars to campus. The endowed position will rotate annually, ensuring that students encounter a wide range of civil rights perspectives. Each year, the Distinguished Visitor will spend one semester teaching two Law School courses and delivering a public lecture. Dean Andrew Perlman recently announced the inaugural Distinguished Visitor: Carol Rose, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts, who will teach during the winter intersession and spring semester of the 2026–27 academic year.

Suffolk Law 3L Jordan Marie Moore knows the world she is graduating into is uncertain, complex, and constantly shifting. It is a challenge, she says, but not a paralyzing one—because Suffolk Law has taught her how to adapt and innovate.

“Something we talk a lot about in clinic is kind of getting comfortable with the uncertainty. You are taught how to see the field of possibilities, [even when] you just don’t know which way things will go,” says Moore, a student attorney in the Suffolk Law Family Advocacy Clinic and member of the award-winning National Trial Team. Last year, Moore was named Best Advocate at the regional championships.

At 25, she and her peers have been shaped by the instability of their pandemic-interrupted college years, as well as a chaotic political and legal climate. “We’ve grown up always being told we’re in an unprecedented time,” Moore says. Given this state of flux, “where we don’t always know what fundamental laws will be kept and applied,” she appreciates how Suffolk Law seeks to teach students beyond their Constitutional Law textbooks, exposing them to how things actually work.

Hannah Hubler’s LinkedIn page lists most of the jobs she has held. Cashier at a dry cleaners in her hometown of Norton, Massachusetts. Sales associate at Target. Usher at a concert venue. Forklift operator at Home Depot, where she moved mulch pallets in the garden department. Paralegal. War-crimes researcher. Judicial intern at the Rhode Island Supreme Court and at the First Circuit Court of Appeals.

During her first year [at Suffolk Law] alone, she worked as a paralegal at a litigation firm, drove the forklift at Home Depot, canvassed door-to-door for a political campaign, researched constitutional questions on abortion criminalization for a professor, and volunteered with the Ukraine Accountability Project—the Suffolk-hosted effort to document alleged Russian war crimes.

In her second year, she held two judicial internships simultaneously, at the Boston Municipal Court and the Rhode Island Supreme Court. It was at the BMC that appeals found her. The appellate division handed her a case, and something clicked. She had minored in English. She loved to write. “Clerking and appellate work just seemed like the natural path,” she says.

She landed at the DA’s Appeals Unit that summer, wrote briefs she later argued, and liked the work so much she came back twice—once after an internship at the First Circuit, where she traveled to Puerto Rico to observe oral arguments, and again this spring, staying beyond her required hours because she wanted to learn more. A brief she wrote has been accepted for direct appellate review by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.

Suffolk University’s Intellectual Property & Innovation Conference on March 26 convened alumni, students, and industry leaders for an in-depth look at the evolving landscape of intellectual property.

The program featured keynote speaker Matt Penarczyk, JD ’95, General Counsel of Disney Experiences, and panelists Mark W. Bellomy; Kevin M. Henry, PhD, JD ’12; Angelyn Larkin, PhD, JD ’19; Stephanie North, JD ’11; Melissa Rones; and Daniel G. Rudoy, PhD, JD ’15, who led a dynamic discussion on the future of IP.

Discussion spanned technology, entertainment, life sciences, and litigation—highlighting how IP continues to shape innovation across sectors.

We look forward to continuing these conversations at future Suffolk Law School events.

𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗝𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 & 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗹. Suffolk Law earned an A, one of 𝟮𝟭 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 nationally to do so. The publication talked to Dean of Admissions Anthony Orlando about two Suffolk Law programs.

—First, the Summer Pre-law Achievers Network brings first-generation and underrepresented college students to campus for two weeks: classes, dorm life, tours of Boston law firms and the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, conversations with alumni like SJC Associate Justice Serge-Georges Jr., JD ’96.

—And second, an alternate admissions path for applicants whose files show grit, but whose LSAT scores don’t tell the whole story. Two weeks of real instruction and assessment help the school figure out what the test might have missed.

We are so proud to offer these programs, and are honored to see them be recognized. by @suffolk_law
