Thank you to everyone who came to our Book Club and Poetry Circle last night, on Thursday, October 15th, 2026! It was wonderful to hear so many diverse, enlightening perspectives. Thank you to @qahwah_house for hosting us and making this unique gathering possible!

We discussed the first two chapters of What is Sufism? by Martin Lings, exploring the concept of Divine ebb and flow and the relationship between Islam’s outward and inward aspects.

Next, during our Poetry Circle, we were introduced to Farid al-Din Attar’s life and work as we began discussing his masterwork Al-Mantiq Al-Tayr (The Conference of the Birds). We examined the beginning of the work, and the symbolism of the different birds and their various excuses for refusing the spiritual path. We split into small groups, each focusing on an individual bird, then came back together to share our insights into their spiritual dilemmas and how those dialogues apply to our modern way of life.

Insha’Allah, we plan to meet again next week in the same location (Qahwah House – Broadway, NYC) to discuss the next three chapters of What is Sufism? in our Book Club (first event) and the story of Shaykh San’an from The Conference of the Birds in our Poetry Circle (second event). The latter will be 90 minutes instead of 60 so we can hear from more participants and share the poetry’s richness in greater depth.

“Inside this new love, die.
Your way begins on the other side.
Become the sky.
Take an axe to the prison wall.
Escape.
Walk out like someone suddenly born into color.
Do it now.
You’re covered with thick cloud.
Slide out the side.
Die, and be quiet.
Quietness is the surest sign that you’ve died.
Your old life was a frantic running from silence.

The speechless full moon comes out now.”

—“Quietness” by Jalal Al-Din Rumi
(Divan-e Shams-e Tabrizi)

Join us as we welcome Kabir Helminski and H. Nur Artıran to discuss the spiritual discipline and etiquette of service within the Mevlevi tradition as part of our talk series.

In the Mevlevi path, the dervish kitchen (Matbah-ı Sharif) is far more than a place of culinary preparation; it is a profound center of wisdom where the ego is disciplined, the dervish is refined, and etiquette (adab) intertwines with service. In this gathering, we will explore Mevlevi manners, the spiritual dynamics of kitchen cultivation, and the living cultural heritage of the tradition.

Consecutive translation in English and Turkish will be provided during the event.
Translators: Selçuk Cemoğlu and Aykut Akalın

Kabir Helminski
Translator of Hz. Mevlana, director of The Threshold Society (Sufism.org), and director and founder of the Baraka Institute (barakainstitute.org). Traveling across North America as a postneshin alongside whirling dervish ensembles from Turkey, he has introduced Sufi culture to tens of thousands of people in universities, performing arts centers, and cathedrals. His recently published works include Loves Ripening, Rumi on the Hearts Journey (Shambhala 2010); The Rumi Daybook (Shambhala 2012); and Holistic Islam: Sufism, Transformation, and The Needs of Our Time (Threshold Books).

H. Nur Artıran
She attended private lessons with various Sufi masters from her childhood. Receiving her first Sufi training on the Niyâzî-i Mısrî Divan, H. Nur Artıran worked closely for many years as the assistant and server of the late "Sertârik Mesnevîhân" Şefik Can (1909–2005). She has prepared numerous works for publication, most notably Cevâhir-i Mesnevîyye and Stories from the Masnavi, and authored the books Aşk Bir Dâvâya Benzer (2011) and Aşk Terk Etmez (2014) compiled from Masnavi talks. She currently continues her work as the president of the Şefik Can International Mevlânâ Education and Culture Association.
