🍂The Petersburgh Harvest Festival kids program this year will be led by Jessica Lewis, an artist, mother, and baker in Southern Vermont.

🧹For older children and teens, give broom-making a try! We will use authentic broom corn and wrap small brooms by hand as they’ve been made for hundreds of years.

🌽 For younger and middle children, come make a traditional corn husk doll! Using dried corn husks we’ll craft special dolls to remind us of our connection to the land and harvest during this beautiful season.

🌻For littlest hands, come play with the textures and colors of the season with homemade goldenrod-dyed play dough! We’ll have sunflowers, seeds, and other tactile bits to make prints and patterns in the dough.

🕰️The program will run from 12-4pm.

🌳If the rain holds off we will have the program outside the town hall under the tree in the grass. If not, we will have the program inside the PVMCC!

☔️If it rains - the festival will still be amazing so come on down either way!

🎨Jessica is unbelievably talented. Her work is so beautiful! We are SO lucky that she has offered to do a kids program this year!

🍁If you know of anyone who would like to volunteer to assist with any of these programs - message us here or mention someone in the comments who might be a good help!

🧑‍🎨 THERE WILL ALSO BE FREE FACE PAINTING!

🍂See you all in 3 days!!

I do it all for the herbs. I love the marigolds and the dahlias and the carrots and cabbage, but every year it’s the rose and thyme and lemon balm and tulsi and bee balm that draw me out to the hedges and the garden every day like a tide yielding to the moon 🌿 morning tea and bundles for the roast chicken and some to hang for winter and some just to see who’s taller than who by @sugarhouseworkshop

It’s tuck-some-fresh-nettles-into-the-stock season and a perfect rainy May weekend to simmer it low and slow over the wood stove 🔥🌿

I roast half a homegrown chicken every week or week and a half, use the bones and skin for stock with a carrot, cut ends of celery, an onion, a few smashed garlic cloves, dried oatstraw, a few calendula blossoms from last year’s garden, and a splash of fire cider. make your soups, cook your rice in it, drink a mugful in the morning, it’s real good medicine by @sugarhouseworkshop

same heart-of-the-home, new beautiful kitchen table ✨ you’ve seen a few different tables here over the years; a small, square one we picked up off the side of the road to fit inside our little cabin with an old wooden highchair to match, a larger round one we ate a thousand breakfasts on. The last one was an old pine farmhouse table that was scratched and dinged long before I bought it secondhand, and we added our share of streaks of paint and carved letters, scorch marks from hot bread pans and even a long piece of maple to hold the whole thing together when it started to rock back and forth on its old, loose legs. And now, this beauty. Made of solid oak and the perfect size, our #hettahome table will see us through family dinners and sewing projects, cake orders and piles of books, birthday parties and homework help for years and years to come. I told the boys we’re going to skip the acrylic paint and carving practice on this one, but they could sign their names and dates on the under-side. Now it’s really ours. {Hetta is having their first sale - 15% off everything through May 26. Go have a look at all of their beautiful pieces} #hettapartner by @sugarhouseworkshop

Spring in my hands— turkey eggs for hatching, surprise crocuses by the side of the road, dried green peas pushed into the cold garden dirt, downy duckling feathers and their scratchy webbed-toe claws. spring in my ears—wood frogs and peepers on a late March hike, the sound of a garter snake’s scaly belly sliding over dried leaves, goose honks and boy shouts. spring I can see—pink morning skies and brown and then gold and green, the earth and everything under it just waiting to be 🌿✨ by @sugarhouseworkshop

I’ve got a new recipe for you 🌰✨ last week for the fourth installment of my winter cookie series, I shared a recipe for this rich, simple, earthy, and, to be frank, addictive chocolate chestnut shortbread. in our house we had colds and bugs all through our holidays and into the new year, but it gave us an excuse to make every moment cozy. no big plans just blankets and board games and long mornings and everything soft. I’m carrying that through now that we’re back to the rhythm of January life- extra sleep for everyone, quiet evenings, low lights so we notice the sun coming back; brothy soups and warm cookies and fall’s old pumpkins frozen and thawed and roasted for the chickens and geese. we’re wintering well thanks in part to @chestnutexperiment who sent me a box filled with American chestnuts for roasting and even some chestnut flour from a farm just over the mountain from here, @breadtreefarms. Find the chocolate chestnut shortbread recipe below that uses @breadtreefarms fine ground chestnut flour, and read more in my last December letter on substack (free for all thanks to @chestnutexperiment!)

Chocolate Chestnut Shortbread
2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup confectioner’s or powdered sugar
½ cup cocoa powder
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup finely ground chestnut flour
Pinch of sea salt

this has been the coldest, snowiest November into December I can remember, and the forecast shows nothing but more of it ❄️ I’m not sure we’ll see the ground again before spring, but I’m grateful for the wood stove and tea and the paper-white-shoots on the windowsill, and this long season that affords me the chance to see every sunrise and sunset, to notice every warm light coming from dusky houses, to catch the twinkle of the Christmas tree in the reflection of the kitchen window. winter’s here 💫 by @sugarhouseworkshop
